Date taken missing on OneDrive for MP4 files

Hi

I'm experiencing some problems regarding the "Date taken" field on OneDrive for MP4-files. I uploaded 2 files (videos are created with different devices on different dates) and only for one of them OneDrive displays the "Date Taken" field. I already analyzed the metadata via Exiftool but it remains unclear to me what causes the missing "Date Taken" field.

Below you can find the Exiftool output for both files. Is there anything I'm missing?

    Dear Zenobia.Z

    Thank you for the information.

With exiftool I verified the existence of the tag. I also didn't adjust them, so it is unclear to me what is going wrong.

Re-uploading the file also didn't solve the problem. I made sure to download the original file from my smartphone in order to test this.

Thank you for the link, I'm now in contact with the support team.

    Best regards

    Jasper

    Dear Jasper De Coninck,

We have received the information you shared with us and the results of your retest and confirmation. We see that the metadata detected by the recreated video information you said also shows that your creation and shooting dates are consistent.

Regarding the fact that the shooting date is not displayed in OneDrive and how to detect the field information of the original data, we need to explain to you:

The "shooting date" field on OneDrive usually relies on specific metadata tags in the MP4 file, such as CreateDate or MediaCreateDate. If these tags are missing or set incorrectly, OneDrive may not display the "shooting date" field correctly.

Because different devices and software versions and different video processing programs may cause OneDrive to process metadata differently. If OneDrive cannot detect the field information of the data normally during the processing process, the shooting date may not be displayed.

At the same time, we have also conducted inquiries and confirmations. Some users said that OneDrive videos uploaded through other devices will not display the shooting date. This is related to OneDrive detecting video information and server display, and a program detection error occurs.

You can try to re-upload your video to OneDrive to see if it can help you find and display the date successfully.

In order to confirm OneDrive's detection information for video data in detail, if possible, we also recommend that you send an email to the OneDrive technical support team through the following link for feedback. The OneDrive team helps you with detection and function repair information under your account.

When sending an email, you need to make sure you visit OneDrive.live.com using your browser, click on the link, and it will automatically bounce back from the OneDrive web version and allow you to send the email. Best Regards,Zenobia.Z | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Dear Zenobia.Z

    Thank you for your reply.

The MP4 file from 28/08/2024 was created with my phone (Oneplus 9) and was automatically uploaded to OneDrive via the built-in back-up function of OneDrive. So, if the metadata was adjusted then this is done by OneDrive itself.

However, I'm quite sure the metadata is untouched. I verified the original file's metadata on my phone and observed the same behavior of identical creation and modification dates. I also created a new video and again the creation and modification dates are identical.

What field of the metadata is used by OneDrive to populate the "Date Taken" field? Are there any scenarios that could cause this metadata field not to be read?

If you prefer, I can send you the newly created file so you can experiment.

    Best regards

    Jasper

    Dear Jasper De Coninck,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

We understand that your MP4 file does not display the shooting date in OneDrive.

We received the file detection information you shared with us. We checked and compared it. We saw that in the screenshots you detected and shared with us:

The file modification time and file creation time displayed in the source file information in the Exiftool output are in the same period, and the file modification time and file creation time displayed in the screenshot showing the shooting date you shared with us are also the same.

    Need to confirm with you:

How was your MP4 shot or created?

Usually there will be a certain time difference between your creation and modification time, but since the detection data of your source files show consistent information, we are worried that the metadata shooting time of some MP4 files is overwritten during the creation process, which makes it impossible to detect and display your time normally.

In order to check whether the information of your original data is normal, we suggest that you try:

Query and detect the original data information of other MP4 files and compare them to see if the file modification time and file creation time are still consistent?

At the same time, can you confirm whether the time displayed in OneDrive is the same after uploading and comparing, or is there still a problem of file modification time and file creation time being consistent?

You can try the operation, which will also help us further confirm the problem information.

If there are any updates or questions, you can reply to us, and we will further help you confirm the cause of the problem. Best Regards,Zenobia.Z | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
