Unsafe location warning for safe folder

Hello,

I have a document that is full of links to .cmd files. This i sby design as the document describes a process and the links run steps in the process. All the CMD files are the same folder as the document, and the folder has been add to the safe locations list in the Trust Centre. Despite this, I always get a notice headed "Microsoft Office has identified a potential security concern" with the content being "This location may be unsafe" and the full path of the .CMD file noted.

It does allow me to proceed, but it's just annoying. Office also gives a warning anyway when trying to run an executable of any kind, so I get two warning dialogs for every click. Given the process has about 20 steps, I'm sure you can see how this gets old very quickly.

Cheers.

You will have to send feedback to Microsoft regarding this, via Help > Feedback in Word and/or by using the Feedback portal at https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback.

Nobody in the forum can change the behavior in Word—only Microsoft can do that.

At a guess, since this is about security, Microsoft will be reluctant to make any changes, though. The customizable security settings within Office primarily protect against macros, and *.cmd files are potentially more harmful.

    Hi Charles,

I'm not entirely clear on what your response is supposed to mean. It seems to say "let it go" without actually saying why the problem exists or even acknowledging it's a problem. If Microsoft acknowledge it's a problem and put it on their list to either fix or correct the documentation, I can see why this would not be the highest priority. But as a paying customer experiencing functionality that is very clearly suboptimal, if not an outright defect, I think I'm entitled to answers. I appreciate your involvement is as a volunteer, but absent a solution or practical suggestions, I think I should hear from Microsoft.

    Thanks,

    Eran

Trusted locations are trusted as to vba content.

    Hi Charles,

Thanks for your response. If you read what the official documentation says, that's not correct, or at least incomplete.

"You should use a trusted location to store a file when you don't want that file to be checked by the Trust Center".

In any case, it makes no sense to have two notifications. I pointed out the first one because I'm kind of used to the second one, which has always appeared, while the first one is a more recent addition, but objectively the issue is that there's no logical reason for there to be two warnings about the same thing.

Microsoft's documentation is sometimes mistaken or over-simplified.

It is possible that what is triggering the response is a check that does not work with the Trust Center settings.

Microsoft's error messages likewise can be misleading. Often one can be triggered almost by mistake as a generic response when it does not apply.

This is not the place to get anything in Word changed.

    Hi EranSegev,

    Thanks for visiting Microsoft Community.

The detection pop-up for secure links in Office applications is designed to protect the security of your files. Unfortunately, this pop-up cannot be disabled through settings. You can report your dissatisfaction with this feature to the Word development team via the in-app help and feedback. However, you can try checking the "Update links on open" option in File > Options > Advanced > General. Based on our tests, toggling this option on and off may change the behavior of the pop-up in some cases.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best Regards,
