Heading 4 changes formatting

My school has a Word template I must use. I have inserted a few Level 4 headings with no problems. When I pressed "enter" and selected Heading 4, an extra line appeared between the new Heading 4 and the line above it. When I update the Table of Contents, the new H4 will not show. When I selected the "Show/Hide" icon, a bold black square appears before the new H4 title (not on any others). I have tried everything to fix this and do not know what else to do.

I got it. I was going through other Heading 4 insertions and clicked on one, when I noticed the Style Gallery had a new option, APA H3. So, I did this with the insertion in question and it worked. As to the ToC, I may not have stated the issue clearly. When I used Heading 4, I then updated the ToC, and the new title did not appear. It now does. Thanks everybody!

    Was the insertion point in the paragraph that displays the symbol? If not you're seeing the settings of a different paragraph.

    Also, John's suggestion for inclusion of Heading 4 certainly is correct but some folks aren't comfortable editing codes. It also can be done by going to Insert> Index and Tables - Table of Contents & selecting 4 from the Show Levels list or by clicking the Options button in that dialog & checking the box for Heading 4.. Then update the TOV.

    Heading 4 does not normally appear in a Table of Contents. To change that, select the whole TOC, right-click and choose Toggle Field Codes. You should see a field code like this:

    { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u }

    Change the 3 to 4, so the 4th level heading is included. Then select the field, right click and choose Update Field. In the next dialog, choose Update entire table, The TOC will update to show Heading 4 and the TOC formatting will revert to the normal appearance.

    The black square is an on-screen notifier only. It does not print or get included in a PDF.

    The ■ symbol indicates that a Paragraph formatting attribute has been modified... Quite likely, Spacing Before.

    Go to Format> Paragraph - Indents & Spacing in the main menu to change the value or set it to zero.

    The setting may be specified in the Heading 4 Style but if so it would have been imposed anywhere that style was applied. In that case it would be best to modify the Style rather than the individual instance.

    The Heading 4 style, like most built-in heading styles, has Space before set in the style. This adds space above the heading.

    To change this, right-click on the Heading style in the Style Gallery and choose Modify. In the Modify Style dialog, set Before to 0.
