OneDrive no longer honoring loyalty bonus of 10 GB

As a longtime user of OneDrive, Microsoft gave me a 10 GB "loyalty bonus" at some point, providing a total of 15 GB of OneDrive storage space. I'm currently using 12 GB of that space.

Everything was honky until yesterday, 11/13/2024, and now the OneDrive client on Windows 11 (different builds, I've tried multiple devices) all tell me I'm over quota and out of free storage space and now I can't save anything:

When I login Online (onedrive.live.com) it still correctly reports I'm using 80% of available space.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

    Hi Lucy,

Sorry you and your team are frustrated with me, but I'm only the messenger. So far, none of the suggestions provided have fixed the problem I'm reporting, therefore they are not helpful.

You seem to be believing/claiming a couple of things:

    1. Loyalty Bonus is the same as a Referral Award - I'm in the US, and this hasn't historically been true. They are additional OneDrive quotas that Microsoft granted to OneDrive users for different reasons. This is why are they on separate lines in OneDrive online, and tracked separately, and have different names.
    2. Microsoft has cancelled both Referral Awards AND Loyalty Bonuses - except Loyalty Bonuses are cancelled only for the OneDrive desktop app

Can you provide any Microsoft documentation, memos, or any communication that backs up either of these two claims? They actually seem to contradict one another.

My belief is there's a bug or issue in the OneDrive cloud service that started on the 13th of November, and I'd like you to report this as such. That would help solve my problem.

Not to be rude, but allow me a moment to educate you on your own product. See below this screenshot showing that Loyalty Bonus and Referral, are separately tracked line items, this is not a regional difference.

Its also important to acknowledge that they are both here, visible in the current UI. If the promotion is/was being cancelled, they shouldn't be here anymore. Your explanations don't make sense. Just report the bug.

    Hello sidhis,

Thank you and the users in this post for your longtime support of OneDrive!

We made a mistake in our previous response that the Loyalty Bonus and the Referral Reward are two different types of storage, and we appreciate your correction!

It is true that some users with an additional 10GB of Loyalty Bonus have recently reported back that they are unable to use this storage in the OneDrive app, but everything shows up fine in OneDrive Web.

The OneDrive team has not yet released any documentation or official note explaining this issue, and it doesn't seem to represent a change in the loyalty bonus policy, so we're more inclined to think it's an anomaly in the OneDrive client when verifying user storage.

This community has limited access and may not be able to resolve this issue for you directly, but it may be helpful to contact the OneDrive team and report the bug directly to them.

A few days ago a user reported that the included Microsoft 365 Basic subscription he had been renewing suddenly showed that 100GB of cloud storage was unavailable, but after contacting the OneDrive team the issue was resolved.

Please see I cannot access my one drive. It says I am out of storage on the 5 gb - Microsoft Community

You can email the OneDrive support team by clicking the link below:   https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=528676P.S. Before clicking on the link, you need to visit onedrive.live.com with your browser and sign in with your Microsoft account, then clicking on the link will automatically redirect to the OneDrive webpage to send an email.

Not sure if they'll be able to investigate the loyalty bonus anomaly just as quickly, but it might be worth a try.

We look forward to any feedback you may have, and we sincerely apologize for providing inaccurate information in our previous response.

    Have a good day!

    Best regards,

Ian - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

I am reporting that as of 12/8/2024 I am having the same issue.

I am using aprox 11GB of my 15GB storage, web reports correctly, onedrive desktop is saying I am over my 5GB limit and has stopped backing up windows/documents.

This loyalty bonus is permanent, hoping this is resolved quickly. I sent an e-mail to onedrive support. There was no announcement of this and it would be a total rugpull if it was intentional. Making me shy away from purchasing a storage subscription when my last 4GB is up and instead removing everything from onedrive and using my google backup as a replacement.

    Hi sidhis

The ‘Referral Award’ that Miyeon mentioned is the same as the ‘Loyalty Bonus’ that you mentioned, but in different regions, this bonus space is called differently.

The bonus space is earned by inviting others and can be up to 10 gigabytes of space. Sorry for the misunderstanding in our description.

Not only you, but we have recently received feedback from some of our users that after they have earned 10G of space through Loyalty Bonus, it is not available in the OneDrive desktop app, even though it can be displayed normally on the OneDrive web side. We initially believe that this issue is related to OneDrive Loyalty Bonus cancellation.

Therefore, we currently recommend that you delete some of your OneDrive files after downloading them locally. Or purchase a Microsoft 365 Basic subscription to get 100G of OneDrive space.

Thank you for the information you have provided, it has been invaluable in helping us to explore this topical issue.

I noticed that you marked your response to Miyeon.S - MSFT as ‘No’, which was very frustrating for us, and hopefully I have provided you with **** more clarity in this response.

You can always share your thoughts with us.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Lucy,

As I remember, both the Referral Award and Loyalty Bonus are permanent. Could you please let me know how Microsoft can change it without any notice to customers?
