I do spreadsheet numeric entry on the road and the existing keyboard is clumsy and difficult to use. are there any ways to activate on in excel? or a good product download??? It shoud pop up when I activate a cell like the regular one does already, but with out all the letters in a numeric keypad format.

    Hello Kevy,

For users who require a numeric keypad for efficient data entry in Excel on Windows 11, there are a few options to consider. One solution is to use the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) built into Windows. To access it, search for 'OSK' in the taskbar search box and select the 'On-Screen Keyboard' option. Once open, click on 'Options' and check the 'Turn on numeric keypad' box to enable a numeric keypad layout. Additionally, third-party virtual keyboard applications are available that offer customizable keypads, which can be tailored to include only numeric keys. These applications often allow users to set the keypad to automatically appear when selecting a cell in Excel, mimicking the behavior of a physical numeric keypad. It's important to ensure that any downloaded software is from a reputable source to avoid security risks. For a more integrated experience, users can also explore Excel add-ins specifically designed to enhance data entry. These add-ins can provide an on-screen numeric keypad within Excel itself, streamlining the workflow even further.

    Hope this helps,

I have finally found an answer to my satisfaction... although it is not a microsoft solution. I have just installed it, set it up to my liking, and now I will try it to see if it works well or tears it all down.

numpad emulator download | SourceForge.net (not sure if that link will work.... but you can bing it...

Well, how exactly do you determine if these apps are from reputable sources or if they do not overwrite current DLL's and mess it all up.

I have tried to add numeric, but it is flakey and sometimes will not offer it... when it does it is a long keyboard and the number keys are microscopic making it hard to use them.

There is also the OSK, which is a stand alone type keyboard... not the same as the one that comes up in excel... using that only makes things more difficult as when I tried it, pressing keys did not enter characters into the excel sheet.

My experience last night was horrific. At times I tried to enter numbers and instead, I was only getting shift characters which was imbicilic as they were not even showing on the virtual keyboard in excel. which I had a screenshot. top row was "1" "2" ... "0" but when I typed "2" it gave me "@" or something similar... for every keypress even though that character was NOT on the key.

Eventually my whole excel file split up graphically... and I lost half a nights data...

Now I will never know if it was the keyboard app I installed... or they keyboard itself... a bad install of excel.... a bad surface tablet....

I think I willl go back to android and to hell with the macro buttons... It is actually easier to do data entry on an android tablet despite not being able to run macros or set advanced options... if you need them.

I have a business 365 account.. so now I am questioning this expense.

I will say the only thing I have done is install the 365 onedrive. Now it should be able to autosave... even though it does not seem to replicate it to the cloud when you turn wifi back on. Apparently, if you do not use onedrive... excel will not autosave. (well that is huge!)

Will continue to look into a number keypad (virtual) but I think Microsoft is constantly dropping and moving things around that actually make it so much harder for those of us who mastered using these apps to the point of it being robotic. (i.e. the metro look for word and excel from the way it looked @office 2000.) sucks getting old.
