I am writing a paper. The backspace key on my computer is no longer working. Is there a way to turn it back on?

At File | Options | Advanced: Editing options, make sure that the option "Typing replaces selected text" is enabled. Backspacing is considered "typing."
Have you quit and restarted Word? Have you closed down and restarted Windows?
Does this problem occur only in Word, not in other applications? If so, try starting Word in safe mode by holding down Ctrl when you start it.
Does the problem persist?
Otherwise, it might be a hardware problem. Try cleaning the keyboard with compressed air.
If that does not help: can you test with a different (or external) keyboard?
