Layers - incorporating optional text into a document

Hi there,

Is it possible to have information in Word on different layers like autocad, and you can select and deselect what you need for a specific supplier.

I work in the design of cold chain MHE and we can 4 or 5 different types of MHE. I want to know if it is possible to have ALL the information in one document (so it is easy to update) and only select what you need to see for one supplier.

I would suggest that you use the Boiler feature from the following page of Graham Mayor's website

Thanks for the information Ralph. not really assisting me but thanks anyways. One guy in my company mentioned using the Developer Tool. is this something that can be used. Let me know please sir.

Word has a very different file structure and design from AutoCad. Ralph's response is really about images rather than text.

The Developer Tab can be a part of a solution, but I strongly recommend following Doug's advice to use the Boiler app.

Anything else is going to involve a lot of work to set up and maintain for anyone who is not familiar with the ins and outs of Word. This has been working for many people for decades.

You could create all of the things you want in a single document and then save the parts as separate documents for use with Boiler.

For best results, you want the formatting and styles of all of the parts to be uniform. If starting from different documents, you can use the [Quick] Style Sets and Themes features of Word to maintain consistency. [Quick] Style Sets and Word Themes in Microsoft Word

My solution would likely involve saving each as a building block and using the Building Blocks Gallery Content Control from the Developer Tab.

    Dear George Moolman,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

We are sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with Layers in Word. I deeply understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

Unfortunately, Word doesn't support layers in the same way AutoCAD does, the closed feature I can think of with similar effect is using the Selection Pane and Grouping features. Not sure if it's any help in your situation. Here's how you can manage different types of MHE information in one document and selectively view what you need:

    1. Insert Objects: Add text boxes, shapes, or images for each type of MHE.
    2. Use the Selection Pane:
      • Go to the Home tab, click Select, and then choose Selection Pane.
      • The Selection Pane will list all objects in your document. You can rename them for easier identification.
      • Use the eye icon next to each object to show or hide it as needed
    3. Group Objects:
      • Select the objects you want to group by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking each one.
      • Right-click and choose Group from the context menu. This allows you to manage multiple objects as a single unit
    4. Toggle Visibility:
      • In the Selection Pane, you can quickly toggle the visibility of grouped objects to show or hide information for specific suppliers.

We understand that this limitation can be frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. We value your understanding, and I also agree with you that this would be a great addition to the features in Word.

Microsoft values user feedback. We encourage you to share your thoughts and suggestions through our feedback community under Word · Community. The product development team monitors this site around the clock and your feedback will be considered. This is the best way to let the team know your needs and help improve our products and services. We hope to see this feature in the future version of Word.

Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

Ralph Chawatama | Microsoft Community Moderator
