Office Not Opening after upgrading macOS to Sequoia 15.0

I am not able to open (double click) Excel and Word files since I upgraded my MACs to macOS Sequoia 15.0. I have spent hours with Apple tech support and they believe it is a compatibility issue. I read many posts from other MAC users having the same issue. Why can't Microsoft share their code so this does not happen? I have been having this problem for over a week now. I use Excel and Office for roughly 90% of my work.

UPDATE: I am not sure if MAC and Microsoft finally worked together or if one of them solved the issue, but this morning when I started using muy MAC Mini, all Microsoft files had the "excel"/"word" logo next to the file and I was able to open them with no issues. When I got home, my MACBook Pro was the same way, I was able to open files. My OS is macOS Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348). Thank you to all the individuals that shared their knowledge to try and help me fix this issue. I hope other people found the informaiton helpful.

If you have updated to MacOS 15.1 and Notification app not working and other app hang not opening (e.g Excel), you need to delete the notification temp folder which prevent the app opening.

Navigate to

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.UserNotifications/Library/UserNotifications/Remote/default

There delete everything inside

I wanted to respond here because after 3 weeks of being on phone calls, chats, forums, etc. with both MS and Apple support teams, I finally got an honest answer from someone on the MS technical team. They said that Microsoft is aware of the issues and that the current version of Office 365 is not compatible with the Sequoia OS (even though Microsoft's own website advertises compatibility). The only "fixes" he knew of were to either revert to the previous OS (Sonoma) or to contact their account team for a refund. I asked him if MS had a timeline for compatibility with Sequoia and he said that he wasn't directly involved, but that if they didn't have it figured out by now (over a month after Sequoia was released at the time of posting), he had no idea. I asked him if Microsoft had any plans to remove advertisements saying that their software was compatible and he responded with, "thank you for calling Microsoft support. Enjoy the rest of your day." and hung up.

It sounds like you don't have the latest update (16.89 or 16.90) of Office installed.

    INSTALL UPDATES:

How to check your version of Office:

If you can open your Office application go to the application menu. For example, in Microsoft Word, go to the Word menu. Then choose About Word. The resulting dialog tells you which version you have.

If you can’t open your Office application, in Finder, go to the Applications folder. Right-click on the application and choose Get Info from the menu.

If your version of Office is currently 14.anything or lower, your software will not run in Mac OS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma or Sequoia. You might consider using LibreOfficeto replace Microsoft Office. LibreOfficeis a free, somewhat compatible desktop suite. Microsoft has a free, on-line version of Microsoft Office at OneDrive.com, which is also a good substitute for users of older versions of Mac OS if you don’t mind the hassle of having to use the web. If your needs are light-duty, try Apple’s Office applications: Numbers, Pages, Keynote and Apple Mail.

If your version of Office is currently 15.anything or 16.anythiing, follow these instructions to install Microsoft Office updates:

Download a copy of the current version of AutoUpdate from this link, install and then run AutoUpdate to bring your installation to current update level, then restart your Mac. If the updater does not open automatically after download, double-click the downloaded .pkg file. Click this link to download the updater. The update is free.
