Hi,
We use several virtual Windows server (2022 and 2019) VMs that require the administrator microphone to be mapped within the RDP session. This can be achieved IF the RDS role is installed with the session host feature, however, this requires licencing which is overkill for the one or two remote sessions that are required by the default admins.
Is it possible to achieve this without RDS? Clients will be Windows 10/11.

Microphone redirection requires RD Session Host be installed on the remote server AND that you connect to the server using a non-administrative RDP session. It has been this way since the feature was added.

FWIW, the mapping of remote audio input does work for administrative accounts when RDS and the session host are installed, so that is all good, but knowing that RDS is a requirement is helpful. Am I then correct in saying that there is a 120-day grace period on the licence once the licence manager is installed and activated, and the licence type and license server location are configured?
To be clear, I wrote "non-administrative session", not "administrative accounts". Has nothing to do with the connecting account having administrator rights.
When connecting to a server there are different types of sessions. An administrative session is the default mode when using RDP to connect to server that does not have RDSH installed, since there is no other choice. When RDSH is installed, you can still connect using an administrative session, but you need to use mstsc /admin (or equivalent setting in .rdp file).
If you just use mstsc (with no /admin) to connect to a server with RDSH installed, it will be a "regular" session, or what I referred to above as non-administrative session above. This is the type of session I refer to above that is required for microphone redirection to work.
There is a 120 day period after installing RDSH whereby the RDSH server will not enforce licensing, HOWEVER, you are still required to have license(s) under the terms of the license agreement. Note this 120 day period doesn't exempt you from the requirement to have RDS CALs.
