Why is Microsoft threatening to close my OneDrive

Received an email:

Your OneDrive is about to be deleted

Your personal account is currently frozen because you are 95 GB over your storage limit of 5 GB. Your files are still there. However, your OneDrive will be deleted on or after 5/31/2024 6:28:30 PM unless you upgrade your storage or free up space by removing files you don’t need.

If your OneDrive is deleted, you won’t be able to retrieve any files you had previously saved in your account.

But when I log in it shows I'm only using 18%!

I have no idea how Microsoft is coming up with its storage estimates. I have never intentionally used OneDrive and don't want to...ever. I store my data on flash drives.

There are photos in the picture file that I didn't place there and don't understand how.

I would delete them all if I knew how but don't see a "select all" feature.

The fact that they’re implementing this is terrible. Would not even open an email if they can’t correct the drive to not be over limit and threatening us.

I’m getting the same email, I’m 1.98TB over my limit apparently.

When I’m logged in it shows I’m only 43GB of 100GB.

The email is coming from ******@notificationemails.microsoft.com

    Hi Jason,

Thank you for reaching out. My name is Leo, a user just like you. I'd be happy to help you with your concern.

This seems to be a rare issue. Can you confirm if the email you received is coming from Microsoft or OneDrive? Usually, emails coming from Microsoft will bear the domain "@microsoft.com". Since you have also stated in your description that there is a discrepancy of information with what is showing on your OneDrive, it might be that there is something wrong. To further check the account storage, it is best to log in via the OneDrive online version at www.onedrive.com, then sign in to your account. From there, you will be able to see the correct storage space. If it is not the same as what you are receiving in the email, I recommend ignoring it or moving it to spam since it might be a phishing email. In case you still need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let us know. We, the community users, are always here to help. Thank you!
