I am trying to backup my photos and videos using automatic backup feature in onedrive android application. But after the uploading, the metadata of the files are getting changed. The date of creation of the files are getting changed to the uploading date. It is making harder for sorting my files. This problem is existing in google photos. How should I backup automatically without losing or altering metadata?

I have only uploaded the photos that are taken using my camera and stored in the device storage. To be clear, these photos are created on this phone only. And I am uploading directly from this device without any interaction with any other cloud storage. This issue with metadata happens both when I am uploading it manually as well automatic uploading. I mentioned google photos just as an alternative for which the issue is not there

    Hi Palakkal,

Thank you for reaching out about the metadata concerns with your OneDrive backups. I’d be happy to help troubleshoot this with you.

To understand this better, could you confirm if the issue with altered metadata affects only photos previously saved in Google Photos, or if it also impacts photos stored locally on your device?

OneDrive generally retains metadata for files directly uploaded from local storage. However, if the photos were initially saved in Google Photos, it will be downloaded to device first before uploading to OneDrive. There might be a change in the metadata during the download process, as Google Photos can sometimes adjust metadata when exporting.

To help pinpoint the cause, could you please try the following?

    1. Manually download a photo from Google Photos and save it to a designated folder on your phone.
    2. Check the file’s creation date in that folder on your phone.
    3. Upload this photo manually to OneDrive and see if the date remains consistent.

This will help us determine whether the metadata changes during the download or upload stages. If this doesn't resolve the issue, let me know, and we can explore other options to ensure your files stay organized.

Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to hearing back!

    Best regards,

    Sophia
