clear all formatting from table of contents and hyper links special case

This is a hard one. I have a long table contents in a MS Word document.

I copied the table of contents into a new document and I want to remove all formatting and links so the table of contents is now just normal text - which I will then format how I would like.

If I highlight and "edit" and then "clear formatting" the table of contents still has the links etc and I can't highlight just one word etc.

MS Word for Mac Version 16.89.1

MAC OS Sonoma 14.6.1

Please help.

Another way to accomplish the same:

Once pasted into the new document, click anywhere in the TOC, press Command+6 to unlink the field then use Clear Formatting on the Styles Pane.

The simplest method to clear all formatting would be to copy the table, then paste it as unformatted text. I suspect you don't want to go that far, however.

The alternative is to paste it normally, then select the pasted table and press The Command button on macOS.+Shift+F9 to unlink the fields.

Copy the whole TOC into a new, blank document. Unlink the TOC so that it becomes ordinary text. You can use the The Command+Shift+F9 to unlink selected fields.

You should be able to clear any undesired formatting from the now unlinked content.
