    Dear Kenneth,

As Stefan said, on Word for Mac, you need to click on Review>Protect>Protect document>Under 'Privacy' tick 'Remove personal information from this file on save' to see the result.

Thank you for your effort and time.

    Sincerely

I am editing an existing document. The file is the result of edits by a number of people. It is a legal document I need to send to other parties. I don't want them to see how the document was created or the various edits and changes that were made to it.

You could also send it as a pdf.

Before you send the document (*.docx or *.doc) to someone else, accept all changes and turn off the tracking. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/accept-or-reject-tracked-changes-in-word-b2dac7d8-f497-4e94-81bd-d64e62eee0e8#AcceptChanges=macOS.

EDIT: The Document Inspector does not exist in Word for Mac, which means that my previous suggestion to remove personal information was incorrect. You need to select a check box for enabling/disabling personal information in Word for Mac. See Cliff Gu's reply.
