I can't activate Office 2010 Home & Student

I have a family pack (3 licenses) of Office 2010 Home & Student, of which I have only used one license. I have now installed Office 2010 Home & Student on an older laptop, for use as a spare computer, and when I attempt to activate the software I receive an error message that the activation key is invalid. When I try to call in to activate the software, I get a message saying that telephone activation is no longer available for this product.

Curiously, although the product is Office 2010 Home & Student, when I installed from the CD the installation included OneNote, Outlook, and Publisher. When I go to the activation screen, it says "Office 2010 Standard." But I don't have Standard, I have Home & Student.

How can I activate this software? I should have two activations remaining and, since I paid for them, it shouldn't matter when I choose to use them.

    Hello Harwood,

Unfortunately this community may not be able to give you valid advice. Also try visiting the Microsoft Learn Office and ask your question there to see if you can get further advice.

If it is really difficult to resolve this Office 2010 activation issue, consider accessing Office Online via a browser on this lesser-used computer, which is license-free and may have less functionality than the Office 2021/2019 you have, but does allow for some basic office work.

Ian - Where did you get the idea that this computer is license-free? I specifically stated that Windows 10 IS activated. Windows is licensed, and I have two UNUSED licenses for Office 2010. All I want to do is to activate one of the Office 2010 licenses THAT I PAID FOR.

Why is this difficult to understand?

    Ian -

With all due respect, your response is not helpful and it does not address the issue. I clearly stated that I installed Office 2010 on an older computer, to be used as a spare. I have Office Professional 2016 on one of my desktop computers, Office Professional 2019 on my primary desktop computer, Office 2019 Home and Business on my Surface tablet, and Office Professional 2021 on my newest laptop computer. I simply see no reason to spend the money for a new version of Office to put on a computer that will be used VERY rarely, when I already have a version of Office with two unused installations remaining on my license.

I should be able to install and use the software I paid for. If I can't, Microsoft has taken money from me under false pretenses. That's either theft, or conversion.

I would appreciate someone telling me how I can activate the license I have paid for.

    Hi,

I am referring to the fact that there is no license required to access Office Online through a browser.

This could possibly work as an alternative to not being able to activate Office 2010.

    Sincere greetings,

    Hi Harwood,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I know you are having activation issues with Office 2010. However, it's true that the product life cycle is over and Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security fixes for Office 2010.

End of support for Office 2010 (microsoft.com)

If still under support, you can get help with phone activation. Unfortunately, Office 2010 is a long time old so we as support are not familiar with activation issues with older versions of Office.

We recommend that you upgrade to a newer version of Office to stay up to date with all the latest features, fixes, and security updates. To learn more about upgrading see How do I upgrade Office?

You can also buy or try the latest version of Office now. Free Trial - Try Microsoft 365 for a month - Microsoft Store

As far as I know, there are still some users in the community who prefer to use older versions of Office, so we'll keep this thread open in order to have friendly community members to advise you.

    Best Regards,
