In Word, I used to use Ctrl+0 to open and close space between paragraphs. It doesn't work anymore with my latest update. Keyboard shortcuts still shows it as valid.

I need to use the keyboard to do this function. my hands are on the keyboard as much as possible, and I use keyboard shortcuts for everything that I can.

It is a mess - Ctrl+0 is now assigned to Zoom100 but it is still listed as the keyboard shortcut for OpenOrCloseUpPara.

You can do the following if you wish to restore the old shortcut.

    • Select File > Options.
    • Select Customize Ribbon.
    • Click Customize... next to Keyboard shortcuts, near the bottom.
    • Select View Tab in the Categories list.
    • Scroll down the list of Commands and select Zoom100.
    • Select Ctrl+0 in the Current keys box.
    • Click Remove.

    • Next, select Commands Not in the Ribbon in the Categories list.
    • Scroll down the Commands list and select OpenOrCloseUpPara.
    • Click in the Select new shortcut key box.
    • Press Ctrl+0.
    • Click Assign.

    • Finally, click Close, then close the Word Options dialog.
    • If Word prompts you to save changes to the Normal template when you quit the application, answer Yes.

    HansV MVP,

First, thank you so much for the clear step-by-step guide on restoring CTRL-0 to its original function. Your opening sentence nails it! - It is a mess - Ctrl+0 is now assigned to Zoom100 but it is still listed as the keyboard shortcut for OpenOrCloseUpPara. I find it hard to believe that there is an overwhelming number of Word users that prefer a shortcut for Zoom100 over OpenOrCloseUpPara to warrant this change. But what do I know? If there really are a 'majority' of Zoom100 keyboard shortcut users then why didn't Microsoft teach them how to make this change, like you just did, and keep the original shortcuts in tact? Additionally, I never got any communication from Microsoft about the change, as I think others did not, hence this post by Dave McLellan, thank you Dave. Microsoft, you can do better. And finally, like you said, it is a mess!

Thank you. Thank You. Thank you. It took me over 1 and half hours but I was able to re-assign the short cut (ctrl+0) back to the "open and close paragraph" function. At 76 years of age, I am too old and too short sighted (glasses on glasses off) for unnecessary software changes.
