This worked for me (going into "Shading") but I had to choose white instead of no color and then make sure it was set to "text" and then the highlighting disappeared. Choosing "No Color" left the text highlighted for some reason. I had a 64 page document with all different highlighting, so I am beyond grateful for this solution! Good luck everyone!

I struggled with it too, especially when i import a citation with highlighted text from one word doc into another word doc

There is a quick fix that worked for me

    1. select any word or phrase or text that is NOT highlighted

    02 click "format painter"

    1. click/swipe the format painter over the highlighted text. The highlight should go away

    Hope this helps

By using the Format Painter, you can remove (or add) Text Highlight Color as well as Shading .

The Reveal Formatting task pane is very useful when you want to investigate which type of formatting has been added at the insertion point. Press Shift+F1 (or Shift+Fn+F1 on many keyboards). In the pane, be sure to select "Distinguish style source."

The only one that worked was the Ctl+Spacebar option.

    Thank you!

(Just curious, why does this happen at all?)

Undesired text formatting may be brought into a document via copy & paste. It is impossible to tell exactly what happened in your document, of course.

I tried all of the other strategies and still could not remove the highlight.

The only one that worked was the Ctl+Spacebar option.

    Thank you!
