Restore old 'Save as' functionality in Microsoft Word

Hello,

I need a way to save documents in a more reasonable manner. The old method would allow me to click 'Save as' and it would immediately open a new window that would allow me to save to my Desktop or Documents or anywhere else using the fewest clicks necessary.

Now for some reason instead of it being a reasonable and fast task, it's slow, drawn out, and confusing.

When I click File, then click 'Save as' I sit and wait for the window to open for me to save, but it never opens. So I hit 'This PC' expecting that save window to open, but again, nothing happens. So then I press browse and finally Word will spend about 30 seconds clumsily opening the only window I needed in the first place so I can simply save a document.

How can I skip all of this and get that window to save a document to open immediately as it is expected to? The old outdated versions can save a document in less than two seconds on old Pentium processors, I don't understand why it's such a slow process on a computer with an SSD, 32 GB of RAM and a mid range modern processor.

I have already turned off the option 'Don't show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts' but I am still being forced to go through this ridiculously slow process to save a simple document.

After making the settings Doug recommends, have you tried use F12 to open the Save As dialog?

In Word, go to File>Options>Save and check the box for Save to Computer by default and set the Default local file location.
