I have a template with a large header. I only want that header on the first page. I am able to delete the content of the header from the next page but not the space. How do I do this?

In Word, each section contains three headers and three footers: a "primary" header and footer, a "first page"pair, and an "even page" pair. Which one appears on a particular page depends on the settings you choose in the Header & Footer ribbon. Read Using Headers and Footers for explanation.

In this case, you should check "Different First Page". Then copy the large header from the primary header (which will start to appear on the second page) and paste it into the first page header. On the second page, enter the smaller header that you want on that page and all the following pages. John may be correct about fixing the line spacing if the primary header is still too large. If your document has more than one section, you'll also need to know about the Link to Previous function.

See “How to have different margins on the first page” at http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/DifferentMargins.htm

Normally, the header only takes as much space as the content within it. You may have defined your page margins to have a large top margin, which can cause the effect you describe.

To see any content that may still exist in the second page header, click on the backwards P icon on the Home tab. The content could be as little as a single paragraph mark that is formatted with space before or after. While you can't get rid of the single paragraph mark, you can format it to take as little space as possible.

If you still can't figure it out, please post a sample document to a cloud service, then post a share link here so we can take a look.
