Office 2024 Mac install with exiting Office 365 already installed

Hi,

Is it possible to have an already existing instance of Office 365 on a MAC and install a new Office 2024 instance while keeping the existing 365? (with different office.com accounts in each of the installations?)

And if it is Office 2021 instead of Office 2024?

Thanks

BR

Hello,jplig

Thank you for your reply.

You understand correctly.

Just in case I did another test.

My original account A, which has a Microsoft 365 subscription, is in the active state.

Then I created an account B. When I accessed the account, all the software that I had downloaded for my Mac was there, and I was able to find Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

I can find Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and then when I open them directly, I am prompted to sign in.

After I logged in to another account that did not have Microsoft 365, it asked me to activate Microsoft 365.

Not a license conflict with account A as you feared.

Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and patience and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks.

So in short and to conclude:

    • I have Office 365 with a specific Office.com account installed on MAC Account User A
    • I already have another user on MAC which is lets say MAC Account User B
    • Next I need to just buy the license for Office 2024 which is tied to another personal Microsoft User account
    • From your reply I just need to log in in MAC Account User B and open the Office Apps (which I Already installed on MAC Account User A) and log in there with the new Office 2024 User Account and it should work right? I don't even need to install again Office 2024 on MAC Account User A because underneath it is the same installation and the differentiation is only at the Office License level?

    Thanks once again

    BR

    Hello,jplig

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm sorry I didn't understand what you meant at the very beginning.

If you have two accounts, it is indeed possible to use different licenses by creating another account on the Mac and then switching users before the two accounts.

Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support (SG)

I also tested your query locally, I created a new local account in my personal Mac. Then both accounts could activate Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 separately.

The local account only modifies the user's profile, it has no effect on the software downloaded on the Mac, and Office, as I said before, uses the same version of Office applications for both subscriptions, but the different subscriptions bring different features!

If you are concerned, do you have Office 2021 in your account? This is also testable.

Subsequently if you purchased Office 2024 you can use the license removal tool I first replied to to reflash the license for Office 2024.

I am glad I was able to provide your some advice so help the issue. To help other customers who may be facing the same issue, please click ‘Yes’ or "No" underneath the post that had the solution for you. This highlights the information for other customers. Thanks for your cooperation.

Sorry didn’t get you. I already have two users on the Mac. One of them already with office 365. I wanted to install either office 2021 or 2024 in the other Mac user.

Hi, you did not say there were two separate Mac users. That is why I suggested: Add a user or group on Mac – Apple Support (UK) I suggested adding another user because that may/should work where one user installs a perpetual Office and the other user installs Microsoft 365 Personal/Family. It this should work because it should work with PC users. Manage user accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support I could not find similar Mac article.

    Hello,jplig

    Welcome to the Microsoft community!

I have realized that you want both Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 on your Mac.

In your case, I'm sorry it's not possible.

The reason is as follows. First of all, you can only be logged into one Microsoft account at a time for Office under one system account on a Mac.

At the same time, Office on Mac as you can see after the download is completed are displayed on the desktop of a single software, such as Word, Excel are separate. The only difference between them is the version number which should be 16.92 at the moment.

The permissions to use them are based on the license you have for the account you are logged into.

If you have Microsoft 365 then it activates Microsoft 365.

Different licenses will result in the software having different features. For example, in the same PowerPoint software, there is a feature that appears as an option when you activate Microsoft 365, but not anyway!

You can click on the Word option in the upper taskbar with Office open, which will show the current license.

If you are Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 at the same time, I would recommend that you continue to use Microsoft 365.

Don't worry if the license has expired, you can use the License Removal Tool to revalidate your Office 2024 license.
