    Yes, you can password-protect a Word document.

    Open the file, go to File > Info > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password, set a password, and save.

    You have been given the correct procedure. One warning, however: Be very careful to remember the password! Once a document is encrypted it cannot be opened without the correct password.
