Disable new Spell Check Pop Up without disabling all of spell check

In Word, I cannot get any work done now that every time I try to edit existing text, a spell check pop up appears and I cannot continue editing. The pop blocks my text and I have to hit escape every 2 seconds. I have tried disabling the text predictions, but the spell checker window keeps popping up so that I cannot edit anything at all.

How do I disable this rage inducing "feature"?

It's not just in Word! It's in EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE! It is happening as I type this!

Then you have to turn off text suggestions (sometimes referred to as predictive text) for your operating system. If you are running Windows, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enable-text-suggestions-in-windows-0bf313ca-c992-4173-aa5f-8341d3953498. Note that your browser may have separate settings that also must be turned off.

If you follow Doug's advice, you will need to run Spell check when you are done, or periodically. (F7 key)

    This is certainly a workaround.

I agree that the pop-up "feature" is annoying.

I know that it is possible to turn off the pop-up (but not the pink) on mouse-over because I've done it.

However, that was a while back and I can't figure out how I did it. Perhaps someone else will be able to provide the answer. I suspect that I followed advice given for this here on the forum.

I know that it has to do with the Editor.

I use the legacy spell-check dialog for spell-checking but still have access to the Editor when I want to use it.

In the meantime, use the available feedback features to try to get Microsoft to make it easier to turn these off.

Go to File>Options>Proofing>When correcting spelling and grammar in Word and uncheck the box for "Check spelling as you type".

To add to what Doug has said, one way to make the spelling & grammar facility less intrusive would be to turn off grammar checking while leaving spellchecking activated. At File > Options > Proofing, keep "Check spelling as you type" selected and clear "Mark grammar errors as you type."
