Default table size in Word

How do I get the table size to be 6.5 at 100% for an entire document? I have my margins set to 1" right and left. It usually works but it is defaulting to 6.65" at 100%. There has to be a way to fix this.

Does your document say "Compatibility Mode" in the title bar? In Word 2010 and earlier, tables set the text to the document margins, then the cell margins overlapped into the margin area.

To get control over the effective table width, see which cell margins have been specified for the table.
