Microsoft office for mac does not respond when opening files

I've been dealing with this problem in the past two months - a Word or Excel document would stop responding when I tried to open it. I've reset the settings and re-installed it more than 20 times, and tried every possible method I could find online. Now I am not sure what else I can do to be able to open and work on the files without having to worry about it not responding/crashing mid-way.

Many thanks for not giving up on me! I've tried to create a new user account, and that seems to load microsoft apps just fine. Does this mean that I'd need to set up and use this new account?

Thank you for replying and using the utility to verify your startup volume.

I think the next test is to make a new user account in Mac OS System Preferences and test in that account to see if the problem persists in a different user account.

Now you know that everything works in a new user account. The installation of Office is fine. If it were me, I would migrate my files to the new user account and then delete the bad one in Mac OS System Preferences and be done with it.

Before transferring your document files, copy your user data from our old user account to the new one. Use the corresponding file locations when copying files to the new account’s locations. Here’s the default location of your templates and user files, but be aware that you may have set other locations in Word > Preferences > File Locations.

To get to the Library folder, in Finder, in the Go menu choose Library.

Other applications may require migration of files, too.

Well, that does indicate that the problem is with the original account. Switching to the new account is optional & a bit of a chore but trying to identify the problem with the old account may not be possible. Even if it can be identified it may not be correctable.

One other consideration: Version 15.2 of Sequoia is now available so you might see whether updating the OS has a positive effect. It's interesting that your 2 month issue coincides with the release of Apple's latest atrocity.

    Dear giulialc,

    Good day to you!

I hope you are doing well. Thanks for reaching out to our Microsoft Community Forum. We will be happy to help you.

I’m sorry to hear that you have been experiencing issues with Microsoft Office applications for a long time. Based on your description, since you have already tried various methods to resolve the issue, I would like to ask if you have tried starting your Mac in Safe Mode. If not, could you please try and check if the issue persists in Safe Mode?

    • Steps to boot your Mac in Safe Mode:
      1. Shut down your Mac.
      2. Press and hold the power button to turn it on.
      3. When you see the startup options, release the power button.
      4. Select your startup disk.
      5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
      6. Once you reach the login window, you should see 'Safe Boot' in the top-right corner.

Here is a Microsoft Support article you may find helpful: How to use a "clean startup" to determine whether background programs are interfering with Office for Mac - Microsoft Support.

    • Create a new user profile on your Mac:
      1. Choose the Apple menu > System Settings, then click Users & Groups in the sidebar.
      2. Input the necessary information to create a new user profile.
    • If the above methods do not resolve the issue, try removing the Office folder from your Library:
      1. Completely quit all Office apps.
      2. In Finder, press COMMAND + SHIFT + G.
      3. Enter ~Library and click Go.
      4. Navigate to the Containers folder, find the folder named Microsoft Word, and move it to your desktop by dragging and dropping it.
      5. Relaunch Word for Mac and check if the issue is resolved. (You can perform the same steps for Excel by finding the corresponding folder.)

Meanwhile, I would appreciate it if you could provide the following details to help me narrow down the issue and offer further guidance:

I am looking forward to your response for further assistance.

I would like to acknowledge that my initial response may not resolve your current situation immediately. However, with your input and some additional specific details, we can work together to identify a clear solution for your current challenge.

Thank you for your understanding. Your cooperation and contributions are greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Nahid Sultan

It's rare that uninstall/reinstall would fix a problem like this one. Installation issues are almost impossible because Mac OS verifies every install before you can use the application. Windows doesn't verify installations, which makes uninstall/reinstall a popular way to fix things on Windows.

What version of Mac OS do you run? What version of Office do you run? Use the Menu Bar and choose Word > About Microsoft Word to display the version number. The current version is 16.93.

I think the first troubleshooting step to take is to verify the startup volume and then test:

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility -

Try that and see if things are fixed. Please write back and let us know, Thank you.
