It turns out that this is deliberate, not a bug. It's an accessibility feature that makes it easier to click the correct button.

I've already used Feedback to ask that they make this an OPTIONAL feature; either a default that we can turn off or a feature that people can enable if/when they need it.

This would be a very good time for anyone else who's annoyed by this to send Feedback also.. The more the merrier (and the louder our voices).

The issue is Office-wide, and appears not only in palettes presented via dropdowns on the quick action or ribbon, but also in all the pop-up-when-editing tools when the font or fill colour picker is chosen. There seems no escape. It changed in 2412 and needs to be fixed. As the OP said, it looks like the original palette was under some sort of gross magnification. It appears less crisp that the pre-2412 palette. Perhaps some bug introduced trying to make the palette easier to use for tablet users? Whatever, it is an awful change.

Hi Steve ... well that's another lousy MS decision, isn't it? his needs to be an option, period. Arbitrary changes like this that affect nearly nobody and can't be targeting desktop users. Who in a right mind uses Excel on a touchscreen with fingers anyway? I will send a new feedback. Thx. {and MS - how about enhancing actual missing Excel functionality, like Name Manager that won't show you where / if a name is orphaned or in use? Now that would be a fix to rally around.]

    Hello Isabella,

The version is 2412 (Build 18324.20092). The problem is on Word and Excel. I've tried zooming out, checking for accessibility settings but nothing seems to work. The palette just looks like it is under some silly magnification setting!

I have also rebooted the computer, but that hasn't worked either.

Hi Steve ... not using PPT but seeing this in Word and Excel, starting with 2412. Was able to roll back an install on one machine to version just before and this issue was not present. But Office updated itself again so back to the screwed-up colour pane on all boxes now. Already bug reported using the tools in Excel. No idea yet if MS considers this a new bug.
