We hold an authorized Microsoft education *** email address removed for privacy reason ***. I'm attempting to set up office 365 on a teacher laptop, but keep getting the error "We're sorry, but there's a problem. contact your IT department to get a license". I am the IT administrator that set up our education account, but am unable to clear this issue. I have a screenshot but if fails to upload. Can anyone help with this?

Many thanks for your kind response,

May I please double confirm if you are using a Microsoft 365 business/school account or a third-party email provider account?

May I please double confirm if you can able to access office apps through web access previously?

May I please double confirm if you can still access your account as an end user via Microsoft office portal? If yes, to check the license assigned to the account, you can follow the steps below and check the license assigned to the account. To do this, go to the Microsoft 365 portal https://portal.office.com/ and sign in with the account in question.

    • Click "Install and more", select install M365 apps. Image
    • Select Subscription, and then check the subscription plan assigned to the account. If it is A1 plan, as I tried to mention above, this license only allows users to access office apps through web and mobile devices, it doesn't include desktop apps.

Regarding the admin account issue, could you please provide us with the error message you are getting?

    • May I please know if recently used this account to sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center as an administrator?

I look forward to your response. Kindly note that the above requested information is required for further analysis and troubleshooting of your situation. Your patience and cooperation are much appreciated.

Thank you for your precious time. Have a nice day.

    Sincerely,

thank you for the reply, however, I'm no longer able to log in as an adminstrator. I am, and have been since the start, the sole administrator of our microsoft education account. I'm not sure what happened.

    Dear Michael Formhals,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're facing. In order to better understand your query and provide possible solution, May I please know the license you have assigned to the user?

Typically, Microsoft Office 365 is available in different Office 365 education plans, such as Office 365 A1, Office 365 A3, and Office 365 A5. So, if you have assigned the A1 plan to the account in question, the A1 plan is the most basic of the Office 365 Education plans and is available for free to students and teachers. This plan includes access to the web and mobile versions of Office apps only like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. It also provides access to Microsoft Teams, which is a hub for teamwork and collaboration. However, this plan doesn't allow users to install/activate Office apps on their computers to access services offline.

In this case, there are other plans available, such as the A3 and A5 plans, which offer more advanced features and include installing and accessing office applications on the user's computer offline. You can view Office 365 Education - Service Descriptions | Microsoft Learn. Therefore, kindly check the license plan you have assigned to the user in the Microsoft admin center. to do this, sign in to Microsoft 365 admin center -->Users > Active users page --> Select the row of the user that you want to check a license for --> In the right pane, select Licenses and Apps --> Expand the Licenses section and check the license plan that assigned to the account in question.

I look forward to your update. Please feel free to let me know how it goes or if I got you wrong. If you still have any concerns, please let me know so I can provide more suggestions.

Thank you for your precious time. Have a nice day.

    Sincerely,
