Set page border to surround header area doesn't stay after saving the file.

Word 2021 Professional Plus

After open a Word document Design -> Page Borders -> Page Border (tab) in the Border and Shading Window. Select Box setting, choose a border style, To the lower right, press the Options button to open a new Border and Shading Options window.

In the Border and Shading Options window:

Under Margin:

Let the top, bottom, left and right default.

Measure from: Text (selected)

Under Options:

Always display in from box checked

Surround Header box checked.

In the document, the Page border has been shown to have the border surround the header area.

After saving the file, and open the saved file, the border no longer surround the header area, only shown on the text area.

Seems that after saving the file, page boader can only be set for the text area or the entire page area. Specifying the Surround Header option is no longer honored.

Read previously asked question regarding the work around. To set the page border to surround the entire page then to adjust the top bottom left and right margin. Unfortunately, the adjustment is limited to 31 pt and no adjustment larger than that limit is allowed. My header is 150 pt in height, and measure from the top page border 56 pt. Thus, the work around doesn't cut it.

Tried the same operations in Word 2010, it works as expected and saving the file preserved the page board surrounding the header without any issues.

Like to report this issue here. Hopefully, the "bug" get's fixed.

Giving a link to the previous answer, work-around, would help us help you.

Consider shrinking the size allocated to your header and footer to the default size.

Put your larger material in the header / footer. It will expand to hold your content but the border may use the size setting.

Can you save a sample with the problem on DropBox or OneDrive and post a link here so that the volunteers answering questions here do not have to try to reproduce the problem?

Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting - - - - - - - and how to do it.

I have tested this issue using a blank document in Word 2021, and observed that Word 2024 exhibits the same behavior. If you follow the steps I listed in my original post, you should be able to reproduce the exact Page Border effects I encountered.

From my background in programming, it appears this might be a bug related to some logic that was present in earlier versions of Word but seems to be missing now.

My document has strict formatting requirements—including a header larger than 31 points—and due to these constraints, I’ve temporarily reverted to using Word 2010 on an older machine that fortunately still meets my needs.

I apologize for not providing any links to a sample document, as my schedule is quite tight. I do hope your team can look into this matter and resolve it soon. Otherwise, my company may have to consider an alternative software solution for our typesetting.

If any of my steps to reproduce the problem are unclear, please let me know, and I'll be happy to provide further clarification. Thank you for your time and assistance.

This is not Microsoft. It is a user-to-user support forum hosted by Microsoft.

The "team" is your fellow users, the best of whom are volunteers. I am a volunteer and am happy to help.

Try setting the size reserved for your header to the defaults.

Then put the material you need in it that default-size header. The header will expand beyond the reserved size to hold it. I do not know that this will help, but it may.

My time is as valuable as yours. The steps to save and share a document with the problem are not onerous.

Word is not a typesetting program. It is a word processor. Perhaps you do need a different program.

If Word 2010 does what you want, why not use that. In my opinion it is the best of the recent versions of Word and does things that recent versions do not (and vice versa).

The place to get the attention of the design team about bugs is not here.

This is a user-to-user support forum. -- You can give feedback TO MICROSOFT designers and decision makers on Microsoft Word or other Microsoft Products using their feedback mechanisms, (not here). (This is a link to directions.)

If you have a business license you can get help over the phone. However, the people here often know more about Word than do the people who provide the phone support.

Also, "Giving a link to the previous answer, work-around, would help us help you." It saves us getting you to tell us what you have already tried and what the workaround that did not work was so we do not suggest it again.
