Why are headings in TOC different colors when using Kindle Previewer on a Word file

When viewed on Kindle previewer, the TOC for my book displays several of the chapter headings and subheadings in blue and the rest in black. On the Word text file in Windows 10, they all appear in black with the superior headings bold and the subheadings normal. I rechecked the font formatting on the headings styles, which are different intensities of black to gray, and all styles are set to automatically update. Oddly, the coloration of the fonts in the Kindle TOC is random between different headings of the same style. Swiping and changing the font color to black (not automatic) for the TOC itself made no difference.

Try modifying the styles TOC 1 - TOC 9 in your Word document to have the color you want. That may carry over.

(I can't promise because I know nothing about converting for Kindle.)

The blue color acts a bit differently in a TOC because people did not want the printed document to be showing blue associated with hyperlinks so both blue and underlining are often removed.

If blue does not work, consider trying green or red or orange instead.

Take a look at your TOC in Word when in Web view.

I do not have Kindle previewer.

Have you looked for assistance at Amazon?

With varied approaches to modifying the TOCs and trying different ones, the problem appears to be with KDP and their previewer. Removing the existing TOC and using automatic ones left no option for only two levels of contents. Going back to my original Custom format (advised by KCreate), where I had those multicolored displays, a new table was created with black font as earlier, but this time it displayed blue-green as it does in Web Layout, although the file wasn’t saved in that view. At least they all came out the same color this time. Maybe it will display differently when it goes live.

    Thanks for your help.

Amazon contributors suggested blue font points at links. I had no internet hyperlinks in the text; however the chapter headers are linked within it. Selecting the entire text and then stripping hyperlinks with Ctrl+Shft+F9 and testing to be sure they were gone, I reloaded the file and previewed it. The same assortment of font colors remained. No further information has been shown on the Amazon site.

    Thank you, Charles,

In the Web Layout view, the headings are uniformly bluish-green and uniformly black in the Print Layout. There are two color schemes that appear in the setup dialog box: the bluish-green for Web Layout and the black for Print Layout. The sky-blue that appears on the Kindle preview doesn’t appear anywhere. There is no variation between lines. I couldn’t find any reference to this on the KDP community site, but I also cross-posted the question there.
