How to unbold underline, when text is NOT bold? All the suggested tips from AI failed.

I have non bolded text with BOLD underline. I have tried ALL of the AI generated suggestions, but cannot make the underline normal (as in NOT bold). I use a MAC. I can't see or find the arrow described here: "To access advanced font settings, look for the small diagonal arrow (called a dialog box launcher) in the bottom-right corner of the Font group. Clicking it will open the Font dialog box for more detailed formatting options."

I have tried deleting the text & retyping the text, I have tried typing the text in a new cell and copying & pasting. I have tried asking for call back or live chat (NO longer available???)

    I see you've asked the same question in the Excel for Windows Community. That may be the source of the confusion.

    The Windows version offers more Underline styles than the Mac version. If the underline was applied in Excel for Windows the only suggestions I can offer are to either;

    • remove the underlining then reapply it, or
    • use Edit> Clear - Clear Formatting then apply Underlining

    I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with — your statement echoes exactly what I wrote. The Underline tool on the Ribbon doesn't offer the Color option if that's what you mean. You have to go to the menu I referred to in order to specify an Underline color.

    Are you sure you're dealing with Underlining rather than Cell Borders? There are a variety of Border Styles. If you can save a sanitized sample to OneDrive & paste a share link in a reply I'd be willing to take a first hand look.

    Microsoft provided those instructions in the AI chat regarding Excel. Apparently their AI capabilities are deeply flawed. I have thousands of normal (non-bold) underlined words in hundreds of Excel documents. The document I am currently working on has BOTH normal & bold underline in various cells. I disagree with you as to what my Excel for Mac application provides in underline options. I see only 2 options provided in my dropdown underline menu: Underline & double underline. Thanks anyway.

    The instructions you're referring to pertain to Office for Windows & perhaps only to Word. There are no Dialog Launchers in the Mac Office programs which continue to use conventional Menus.

    The equivalent would be to use Format> Cells - Font in the menu bar but Mac Excel does not provide for Underline options other than Double & Color. Whether the underline is bold depends on whether the underlined text is bold. There is no independent control. Only Mac Word & PowerPoint provide underline variants.
