My headings do not have the same format, how can I make them look the same?

The second heading (2.1 The Tet Offensive) is my issue because as soon as I use the heading settings

a) there is an automatic space that I cannot get rid of and

b) the other headings all have thicker first letters (like in the picture), and I do not know why or how the headings look different when I used the same settings

(also I use word on my Mac)

Looking at your sample document, when I select the 2.2 heading and press Ctrl+SpaceBar, it reverts to the the formatting of heading 2.1 THE TET OFFENSIVE.

So what you need to do is incorporate the formatting of 2.1 into the Heading 2 style. You can do that by selecting the text and update the style to match the formatting. You'll need to Undo the Ctrl+SpaceBar action with Ctrl+Z first.

I could guess but prefer to go straight to the source.

Could you save a small sample document with the problem on OneDrive or Dropbox and post a link here?

These are styles. They can be modified.
