Set default Input Language to English in Excel for Mac

Dear Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing an issue with Microsoft Excel for Mac (Version 16.95, Microsoft 365 Subscription) on my MacBook Pro (macOS Sequoia 15.2).

My Mac keyboard settings are configured for two input sources:

  • English (Canadian)
  • Russian (PC)

However, each time I open Excel and start typing, the input language in the MacBook top panel automatically switches to Russian instead of remaining in English (Canadian), which is my preferred input method. This happens regardless of my previous settings, and I have to manually change it back to English each time.

I have checked the following:

  • My macOS Language & Region settings are set to English (Primary) and Russian (Secondary).
  • In System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources, automatic language switching is disabled.
  • In Excel’s Language Preferences, English is set as the application language.

Despite these settings, Excel consistently defaults to Russian upon startup, causing significant workflow disruption.

Could you please provide guidance on how to permanently set English as the default input language for Excel, or at least prevent Excel from changing my system language settings?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

Taisiya

Have you tried restarting the Mac? It may seem obvious but often is overlooked. It can chase away a number of gremlins. If that doesn't put it right...

Before attempting to troubleshoot I recommend updating Sequoia. Version 15.3 now is available. That might make a difference, especially since you apparently are using the Beta Channel update for Office.

If you need further assistance please explain exactly how you went about doing this: In Excel’s Language Preferences, English is set as the application language. Unlike Word, Excel for Mac has no Language Preferences. The Language should be determined by the OS System Settings.
