Sharepoint Sites Export: Private Channels within Teams Site / Group

I understand that Private Channels within Teams Site are a separate "site collection" than the parent Teams Site/Group.

  • Is the storage for the Private Channel part of the Parent Group's storage, or is it completely separate from the Parent Group storage? For instance, Private Channel A has 50gb of storage and Parent Teams Site/Group has total of 80gb. When Private Channel A is out of storage I assign another 50gb to it which makes Private Channel A have a total of 100gb. However, it's parent Teams Site still shows 80gb of total storage.
  • If storage of Private Teams Channels are separate from their parent Teams Groups, how could admins run export that reflect ALL of the private channels in it's environment? I ran export on all active and archived sites but the export did not exclude any of the Private Teams Channels.

I've raise support ticket to MS but only got a reply of two links that doesn't answer my questions/concerns. If someone from the community could pls point me the way would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Jeremy Chang4,

As per the description, it seems like you have already tried to raise a support ticket with MS online support team but the engineers there didn't provide much information for you dedicatedly. In this situation, below are some additional information I have found for you for a reference.

Firstly, as you noticed, currently Private Channels within Microsoft Teams are indeed separate site collections from the parent Teams site, which means that the storage for Private Channels is also separate from the parent Teams site storage. Hence, if the admin allocates additional storage to a Private Channel, it does not affect the storage of the parent Teams site. In your example, if Private Channel A has 50GB of storage and you assign another 50GB to it, making it 100GB in total, the parent Teams site will still show its original 80GB of storage.

Besides, regarding to export data that includes all Private Channels within your environment, I found a similar thread for you: Powershell command to export ALL private Teams memberships, including private Channel memberships | Microsoft Community Hub where it provides the PowerShell scripts. Also, to include storage details, you may still need to use additional SharePoint PowerShell commands to fetch storage information for each site collection associated with the private channels.

But since our category is mainly focus on the general and build-in features queries of SharePoint Online, to make sure you can get the professional and appropriate support from SharePoint escalated engineers, I recommend you post in the related Microsoft Q&A Community- SharePoint Development tag, which is the specific channel to handle such SharePoint developed customization and engineers there have more overall support resources like offer you a specific PowerShell scripts based on your requirement of required export contents.

Meanwhile, I will keep your thread open here and welcome other community members or MVPs may share their suggestions and experience for you.

Please correct me if I made any misunderstanding or if there have anything else I can do for you.

Your patience is highly appreciated. Hope you a nice day and stay safe!

    Best Regards,

    Mia
