Unable to insert online pictures into a word document

I'm using Word 2016. Starting yesterday I can no longer insert an online picture into a word document. I click that option and the box pops up as usual. I type my search item into thew BING box and a small number of choices appear. I used to get hundreds. When I try to choose one I can't check the box and the "Insert" option at the bottom stays gray. I have tried opening Word in safe mode and that doesn't help. I also checked to be sure that "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" was not checked.

Hello HMP123,

Welcome to the Microsoft community and thank you for supporting Microsoft products and for your detailed description of the problem. I understand the inconvenience.

It is true that recently some users have been experiencing similar issues when inserting “Online Pictures” and “Stock Images” in Office applications, where the loading window appears blank and cannot load the picture or the Inset does not work. This is basically related to some online service or synchronization related glitch on Microsoft side, which could be the reason why you have tried multiple fixes but still haven't resolved the issue.

As this is a common issue affecting multiple users, it is recommended that you send feedback to the Microsoft support team for further investigation after ensuring that all updates have been installed and that your internet connection is working properly. The Microsoft team will typically release a targeted fix update based on user feedback to ensure the issue is resolved.

Since you have already made many attempts that have helped troubleshoot the issue that is not related to your Office applications or network environment, please don't waste your valuable time continuing to search for a solution; waiting for a Microsoft fix is the most effective solution at this time.

  • In any Office application, click File -> Feedback.

Thank you for your patience, your feedback on the issue helps to speed up the fixing of the problem. If I learn of any progress on a fix, I will share it with you here.

Best regards,

Ian - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
