Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time, I know this is a long post. But I figured details might help! :)

I ran into an often reported Issue with OneDrive Deleting Shared Folders from my Windows 11 File Explorer.

I had 4 Folders from different accounts shared with my Account (All members of my Family we are all together on a Family Plan) I linked the Folder online via "add Shortcut to my files" so that these Shared Folder would show up in my File Explorer on my Computer.

Now 2 days ago all of them got automatically renamed in my explorer and most of them deleted after and replaced with a link/Shortcut to the online Folder.

Originally it looked like below (Main and Main2 are the Folders from my own account which are Desktop and Mobile automatic Backups- Those two Folders didnt change throughout the whole ordeal):

Main

Main2

SharedFolder1 (200-600GB) mostly "online only";

SharedFolder2 (350GB) "Keep on device";

SharedFolder3 (200-600GB) "online only";

SharedFolder4 (200-600GB) Half of it "keep on device";

Yesterday Morning I suddenly saw that 600+GB of data had been deleted from my Hard drive - so I checked and found Following Folder Structure (It renamed some Shared Folders to "[Folder Name]-[Name of my Main AccountFolder]" and deleted most of the contents)

Main

Main2

SharedFolder1 (15GB);

SharedFolder2 (350GB);

SharedFolder4-Main (0GB);

SharedFolder3 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

SharedFolder4 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

At this time OneDrive said it is Processing 120.000+ changes.

A few hours later it had changed again:

Main

Main2

SharedFolder1-Main (15GB);

SharedFolder2-Main (350GB);

SharedFodler1 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

SharedFolder2 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

SharedFolder3 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

SharedFolder4 |Link-Shortcut to online|;

So In the evening it had deleted Shared Folder3&4 and replaced them with only a Link/shortcut.

   Folder 1 Had been renamed and a Link generated. Expect for 15GB everything else had been deleted (those 15 GB might have been "always keep on device, and the rest could have been online files). In Folder 1 the Folder Sturcture and all the SubFolders are still there, just most of the content has been deleted)

   Folder2 had been renamed but all the files were still on my computer, Folder2 was completely set to "always keep on this device" . Folder1 and 2 now show sync errors stating "You already have a File or Folder with this name in the same Location" I named them back From "Shared1-Main" etc. to just "Shared" but nothing changed.

In total about 600GB+ Of Space on my Harddrive freed up, So I know it didnt just delete online Files but also alot of Downloaded or "keep on device" files.

I cannot tell if the deleted Files were always on device or just Downloaded though.

  • I tired restarting OneDrive several times.
  • I unlinked and relinked the shared Folders online several times.
  • I Deleted Onedrive from my computer reinstalled it and setup the Onedrive Folder in the same Place as before again. As I reinstalled OneDrive said "there already is a Onedrive Fodler on this computer, do you want to use it" and I clicked yes.
  • I tried unlinking the account but it got stuck on "signign out" for several hours without actually signing out.

Thanks again, I hope somebody knows what to do :)

    Hi OneDriveSyncSucksHardTheseDays,

    Thanks for visiting Microsoft Community.

    The issue of OneDrive shared folders turning into shortcuts in File Explorer is a known problem that remains unresolved. However, based on information gathered from the community, there is a temporary workaround for Windows**:**

    • First, log in to onedrive.live.com via a web browser. In the root directory of the folder shared with you, select any Office document, click the three dots - Open - Open in app.
    • In the opened Office application, click File - Home. You can see the shared file you just opened under Recent. Right-click it and choose "Copy path to clipboard."
    • Open Windows Explorer, find "This PC" on the left, right-click and select "Add a network location." In the "Add Network Location Wizard," click Next, then click "Choose a custom network location."
    • Paste the copied file path into the input box, and delete the file name portion (for example, if the path you copied is https://d.docs.live.net/xxx/xxx/ABC.xlsx, you should delete ABC.xlsx and keep the preceding part).
    • Then, enter your OneDrive account username and password in the pop-up window, set a name for your folder, and click Next to complete the creation.

    At this point, you can directly access your shared folder in "This PC" in File Explorer. There may be some delay, but this can serve as a temporary workaround while waiting for the issue to be fixed.

    Hope this helps.

    Okay Quick Update:

    it only worked with one SharedFolder with all the others it says: "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another"

    Similar to what Roxy described.

    If I choose a subfolder of the Shared Folder it sometimes works again, but that would mean Linking several dozen Subfolders manually.

    Any Ideas how to avoid this?

    Hi Jonathan,

    Thanks for taking the time to explain the workaround.

    It sort of works. I linked the Folders an then changed change the FIleSize Limit in the Registry Editor, so I could access Files bigger than 47MB. It has a few very obvious limitations, seeing that there is no Thumbnail Previews, no Statusupdates on the upload, no option to save Locally etc.. So I will hope somebody comes up with a fix. My Support Request is still queued so let's see what happens there ;)

    As for anybody trying to use the workaround, after linking your Folder you want to do the following to avoid the Error 0x800700df:

    Change the File Size Limit in Registry Editor: Open the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > WebClient > Parameters. Modify the FileSizeLimitInBytes value to a higher number, such as 4000000000, and set the base to Decimal (or stay in Hexa and just write as many "f"s as you can :P)

    Best Regards

    Hi, This workaround didn't work for me.

    I'm having this same problem suddenly with OneDrive for my shared folder (2 computers running Windows 10 &11). Although this is on Windows, the issue seems to be with OneDrive.

    Using the workaround you shared, I was able to successfully add the Network Location to File Explorer. However, the folder won't open. The screen flashes like it tried but then nothing happens.
    In case I made a mistake, I tried to add the Network Location again but now, for the same link used previously (even selected in the drop box), it is giving me an error of: "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."
