Win11/365/Office/Onedrive

Hi - been running W11 with a free month's trial of 365 which is just ending.

We've reconsidered and decided we don't want the £105pa 365 subscription and have bought a standalone version of Office 2024. This won't install until we ditch the 365 subscription, and now we find we potentially stand to lose access to Onedrive - not immediately, but eventually.

But...what about the Onedrive files resident on our local C drive? Surely they will still be available there if M$ pull the plug on our Onedrive access and there should be no need to download them? Thoughts? Comments?

Dear Pidgeonpost,

Thank you for your reply. You are right! Office 2024 can be used together with Basic. In fact, they are different products. Office 2024 does not include Outlook and OneDrive capacity. Basic provides both.

You can log in to your Microsoft 365 account that is being tested on the website here. Check your subscription to see if automatic subscription is turned on. If so, turn it off. Then you can subscribe to Microsoft 365 Basic. When your trial expires, it should automatically become a Basic subscription.

Basic is only for one person, so you are right to think that you and your wife need to subscribe to it separately. Office 2024 is a one-time installation for devices. It can be used on one device. The disadvantage is that you may not be able to use it if you are away from home.

If you have any difficulties with the subscription, I suggest you contact our online support. They can help you cancel the subscription and subscribe to the Basic version:

Contact Microsoft Support:

  1. Visit this website:  Contact - Microsoft Support
  2. Type your problems in the search box there. ( For example, Contact support.)
  3. Now click on Get Help and select Contact Support below. Image
  4. Go to the Products & Services tab and choose the Microsoft 365 and Office category
  5. On the Category tab, choose Manage My Subscription.
  6. Go to Confirm.
  7. Choose to chat with a support representative or request a call back.

Note: The contact support team only works at certain times, so if the last window says it's not there, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. That way, they can call you and help you.

By the way, if you think my reply is helpful to you, you can mark it as "yes". This is very important for our customer evaluation. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know, I am always here.

Best wishes

Hi - thanks for your email and confirmation that 365 Basic and Office 2024 should give us what we want.

Yesterday I unsubscribed from 365 Family somewhat nervously and launched the Office installation. It failed initially, stating that I needed to uninstall 365 Family, but having done that the installation went ahead without issue.

I then attempted to subscribe to my personal subscription to 365 Basic but the process ground to a halt - I can't remember the exact error message. I suspected that this might be because it conflicted with my 365 Family subscription which doesn't expire until 27th Feb, and an online chat with Support confirmed that.

That's where I am today. In a couple of days I'll be picking up again on 365 Basic subscription which should go ahead without issue. 🤞

Thanks again for your help and support. 😊

Hi PykeD, and thanks for your very helpful reply.

We (my wife and I) like having Onedrive as it gives access to our files across mobile devices. This flexibility would be lost without Onedrive or an alternative. We don't really need the 'full fat' 365 experience so the your suggestion of a 'Basic' subscription each alongside the locally installed Office 2024 would appear to fit the bill. This raises another question: Will Office 2024 install alongside 365 Basic? I'm also wondering about the best sequence of events to ensure a happy outcome. I'm thinking :

    1. Unsubscribe from our current 365 subscription.
    2. Install Office 2024.
    3. Take out 2 x 365 Basic subscriptions.

    What do you think?

    Kind regards....

    Dear Pidgeonpost,

Hello! Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It looks like you are trying out Microsoft 365 and have some questions about the OneDrive trial, I will try to explain it to you.

First, in the OneDrive folder on your local C drive, select the files you need to save locally, right-click, and select "Always keep on this device". Or simply transfer all the files you need to another hard drive. This ensures that no matter what happens to OneDrive, your files will not be lost.

    • Regarding the issue of Microsoft 365 subscription expiration:

You can stop the Microsoft 365 subscription in the subscription in advance. After the trial period ends, you will automatically lose the benefits. For OneDrive, you will lose 1TB of space. But the basic 5GB of free space will be left.

You don’t lose access to OneDrive, you can still see these files in OneDrive at any time. If your current OneDrive file storage occupies more than 5GB, after losing capacity, the files exceeding the limit will not be lost temporarily. Some files will be automatically deleted over time. So you need to manually delete some files in advance to get your occupancy back within the limit. For this operation, I recommend that you do it in the OneDrive web version.

My OneDrive says it's full - Microsoft Support

In addition, if you think OneDrive is good and you want to continue using it, but you have some needs for capacity, you may consider the Microsoft 365 Basic Edition. It provides the use of outlook and 100GB OneDrive capacity. The price is also lower. It is a good choice with Office 2024. If you need, you can check the following link:

Microsoft 365 Basic Plan & Pricing (Includes OneDrive 100gb Storage, Outlook) - Microsoft Store

If you make any progress, feel free to let me know.

    Best wishes
