Trouble extracting a zipped .pptx file

I am PPT superuser on a mac. My issue: I used to be able to change the .pptx extension to .zip, then open the zip using Stuffit Expander. That would then create a folder (so i could swipe assets outside of ppt) and it won't do that for me now. It just creates an .xml file. Anyone else have this issue?

Found a fix!!

Through Self Service:

We downloaded "The Unarchiver" and that worked!

Once you open The Unarchiver"

Head up to FILE and select "Unarchive to Current Folder" (current folder your .zip file is in)

All is well again!

Thanks for all the info!

I can't explain why or offer a solution but I can confirm your findings. I suggest using Help> Feedback in the PowerPoint menu bar to report the issue to the Microsoft development group, Include a link to this thread.

You most likely will not receive a personal reply but Feedback is monitored by those who matter.

Unfortunately, Stuffit is discontinued (2019) & support from Smith Micro has been withdrawn. I don't know whether Apple has picked up the reins now that they are providing the app. I do know that Apple's Archive Utility won't do the trick.

    Thanks for the quick response!

    Regarding your question:

Do you mean that the file becomes filename.html after you rename the PowerPoint file and change the extension to .zip?

    Not quite.

I right-click the ppt file, compress it so it becomes a .zip file, then I uncompress it using STUFFIT EXPANDER.

In my experience, at this point, EXPANDER would create a folder full of media etc.

That is not happening anymore, EXPANDER just creates an .xml file instead of a folder.

    Dear Leslie,

We are glad to help you and may need some more information for troubleshooting.

Do you mean that the file becomes filename.html after you rename the PowerPoint file and change the extension to .zip?

If yes, may I know whether the issue happens with other types of Office files or non-Office files? Does the issue occur only with PowerPoint files?

If it is convenient, I suggest you right-click on the file>Compress the file to see if it can become the .zip file.

Welcome to share any updates at your convenience.

Thank you for your time and effort.

    Sincerely
