I have saved mispelt word in word(365). I have looked at a number of simalar question but none of the solutions work. In options proofing there is no main dictionary shown only two customs dictionaries one is completely empty and the other only has my name initials etc. The Only check main dictionary is not ticked yet the main/default dictionary is not displayed. Spell checking appears to be normal in documents. I am using a 365 university account (enterprise?) on my home machine (windows 11) Any help appreciated. I also do not understand why the words I added to the dictionary are not in one of the custom dictionaries. Tried to upload screen shot but kept failing

Despite being old, the page Doug linked is quite accurate. Many features in Word have changed little over the years.

The screens can look a bit different. I see the Change Default button on your screenshot (Grayed out).

The New button is active on your screen.

The location of the Custom dictionary should be: C:\Users%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Uproof\Custom.dic.

It can be opened in a text editor like Notepad and words changed/added/deleted.

They must be one word per line with no blank lines and in alphabetical order.

My dialog also only shows the custom dictionaries it that dialog. Since it is the Custom Dictionary dialog, this is not surprising.

    "none of the solutions work"

While I'm sure this is true, it does not tell us which solutions you have tried that do not work.

You never add words to the main spelling dictionaries.

By the way, although Microsoft labels these as dictionaries, they are word lists, not dictionaries.

The controls to change the default proofing language are elsewhere.

Thanks Doug for this, lots of very useful information but it does not seem to solve the problem. The document may be outof date as does not correspond with what is on my screen in my version of word 365 (even when is says its for 365 - section 6 for example where it says change default - this is not displayed on my machine not even greyed out) and the other main dictionary advice simply just takes me back to screens where only the two custom dics are displayed but no main. Makes no difference if I set proofing language to uk or US english. I would rather not loose the words I have added but is there a way to reset (reinstall) the main dictionary (if I knew where it was on the disk!). Have tried modify/quick repair to MS enterprise app but no difference. Any further help appreciated.Image
