    Dear Trevor Makotose,

Thank you for sharing your question with the Microsoft community.

I understand that you would like to be able to use the free version of Office 2016, and I understand your feelings as I am an Office user like you.

Word 2016 is part of the Office 2016 suite and requires a licence to be purchased in order to use it, this is due to the fact that in you register your information for purchase, which is your credentials to access Office. Microsoft supports the development and maintenance of the Office suite by selling it, which also takes some resources, as I hope you can understand. Therefore Word 2016 is not free.

However, you can use the free Word Online which has basic word processing features: Free Trial - Try Microsoft 365 for a month - Microsoft Store

You can also try to download Office 2016,but logging in after you have installed it may require activation, where you will need the credentials of your subscription: Useful Microsoft download links for Office (direct links) - Microsoft Community

Hope this gives you some clear direction.

If you have any other questions, you are always welcome to contact us in the community.

    Have a great day.

    Best regards
