I noticed that you seem to open the PDFs in a web browser. Charles has assumed that means you are also running the online version of Word, but your earlier reference to Word Options makes me think that you do have the full version of Word (Office).

Do you see any improvement with the PDFs if you open them in Adobe Acrobat Reader (the free version) rather than in a browser? It's a bit of a long shot but worth testing.

From your screenshots, it is apparent that you are using the online app rather than the desktop application.

    That is a different program.

My opinions on various Word offerings in a pdf.

If you try a free PDF converter (virtual printer), such as PrimoPDF, does that produce a better result, with visible images?

In Word, how does the preview display at File > Print?

In many ways, PDF conversion resembles a printing process.

In Word, how do the images display in the print preview at File > Print?

Is the option to "Print drawings created in Word" selected at File > Options > Display? (The words are a bit misleading, as the option applies not only to drawings but also to images that are NOT "In line with text.")

    Dear WSH E

Thanks for raising your concerns in Microsoft Community.

According to your description, I understand that after you exported the document to PDF format, the inserted picture cannot be displayed. I understand your feelings, and this problem is indeed troubling.

First, I need to confirm some details with you:

    • The picture you mentioned turned black, does it mean that the area where the picture is located is displayed black?
    • In addition to [Save As], will this problem occur when saving PDF using [Print]?
    • And does this problem exist for all pictures and documents?

We can first check the relevant settings when exporting PDF. In the save interface of Word, select [Standard] format, click [Options], check [Comply with PDF/A], and check whether the exported picture can be displayed normally.

If the issue persists, could you please provide a screenshot of the specific interface in the PDF and share it with us via reply? This will help to clarify the issue. And what version of Office are you using? And are the sources of the inserted pictures consistent? For example, are they all inserted into the document by copying and pasting?

I hope the above information is helpful to you. We are looking forward to hearing from you and will continue to assist you.

    Best Regards,

Tracy - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
