Memory management on a Mac is handled by the OS, not the individual programs. You might try starting up in Safe Mode to help determine whether any background processes are having a detrimental effect.
Also, PowerPoint cannot be completely deleted without completely removing the entire Office suite. There are many shared resources which are not application specific. That's one reason why reinstalling on a Mac is not a recommended course of action... It rarely fixes anything other than coincidentally but may cause data loss & other issues.
Another factor is the actual pixel dimensions of the images. If they are not properly prepared it stands to reason that the more you add to a presentation the greater the demand on system resources.
Please provide specific Version Numbers of the macOS & Office software you're using as well as the type of License for Office. Depending on those factors latest version can have about a dozen different permutations.
So first off, I am not a noob when it comes to computers in general, Mac hardware and OS, or MSFT Office, a product I've been using since the late 90's.
- I have completely removed the entire office suite which included going directly into user resource folders and deleting everything Microsoft.
- The images that I am using are stock photos and icons from trusted online sources and I regularly use the Compress Images functionality of PPT to reduce image sizes.
- I have a Mac Studio M1 Max with 64GB of RAM and the suite is installed on the internal SSD that came with the system with 1.24 TB available of 2 TB.
- I'm running Sonoma 14.1.2.
- The PowerPoint version is 16.80 and all available updates have been applied and my License is a Microsoft 365 Subscription
