PowerPoint for Mac performance slows down as I’m using it.

This has been going on for about 18 months now. Ever since I got my Mac Studio. I have the latest versions of Mac OS and I’ve completely deleted and reinstalled the latest version of PowerPoint on my machine. I build decks that can be anywhere from 40-70 slides with a mixture of photos and builds for a training program I’ve developed. Every time I am in content development mode as I go through building out my deck, PowerPoint performance degrades to the point where I type something in and there can be a 1-2 second delay. The app gets to the point where it’s crawling along, lagging far behind where it should be. My only option is to save my work, close the app and then restart it which gets me back to normal performance. But that ends up degrading again, anywhere from 30-45 minutes later when I need to go through the same cycle of closing and restarting the app. It’s almost as if this is a memory leak issue.

The one upshot is that I end up being forced into Pomodoro-like development, but it’s still annoying and I expect better memory management from Microsoft products.

Same problem here, my Mac falls apart after 1h powerpoint usage, needs to reboot, quitting ppt does not help.

This is seriously impacting my work hours.

I have the same problem. Apple M2 Max w/ 32G Ram using Mac OS Sequoia 15.3.1 (24D70).

Fresh after a restart with all other applications closed, I ONLY open Powerpoint with a 10MB presentation. Everything comes to a crawl within 5 minutes and typing is delayed by 10-15 seconds. The only thing that solves this is rebooting. Seriously irritating when I'm presenting to C-Level Staff and I'm an IT guy who can't even fix his own computer....real neat!

Same issues here, but only seems to happen if the doc lives in sharepoint and is opened for editing using the desktop app. Does not seem to happen if the doc is living on the machine's hard drive. Not yet, anyway! ;)

Thank you for posting this Andrew,

I am having the exact same problem with Powerpoint on my MacBook Pro M1 Max with 64GB RAM. I'm running Sonoma 14.5 and it is up to date.

Powerpoint slows down to a crawl after 15 to 30 minutes of work. Only quitting and restarting Powerpoint fixes the issue. This is extremely frustrating.

Microsoft engineers will have no trouble reproducing this issue on a MacBook. Please let me know if you require any further information.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Ruben Meerman

Memory management on a Mac is handled by the OS, not the individual programs. You might try starting up in Safe Mode to help determine whether any background processes are having a detrimental effect.

Also, PowerPoint cannot be completely deleted without completely removing the entire Office suite. There are many shared resources which are not application specific. That's one reason why reinstalling on a Mac is not a recommended course of action... It rarely fixes anything other than coincidentally but may cause data loss & other issues.

Another factor is the actual pixel dimensions of the images. If they are not properly prepared it stands to reason that the more you add to a presentation the greater the demand on system resources.

Please provide specific Version Numbers of the macOS & Office software you're using as well as the type of License for Office. Depending on those factors latest version can have about a dozen different permutations.

So first off, I am not a noob when it comes to computers in general, Mac hardware and OS, or MSFT Office, a product I've been using since the late 90's.

    • I have completely removed the entire office suite which included going directly into user resource folders and deleting everything Microsoft.
    • The images that I am using are stock photos and icons from trusted online sources and I regularly use the Compress Images functionality of PPT to reduce image sizes.
    • I have a Mac Studio M1 Max with 64GB of RAM and the suite is installed on the internal SSD that came with the system with 1.24 TB available of 2 TB.
    • I'm running Sonoma 14.1.2.
    • The PowerPoint version is 16.80 and all available updates have been applied and my License is a Microsoft 365 Subscription
