Using MS Word 365, and recently having a problem when selecting shapes. A shape I selected will suddenly be unselected (without clicking off of it), or a different shape altogether will suddenly select itself (without clicking anything). Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Yes, that's the initial set of troubleshooting and we can move to the next. ( I doing it one-by-one to narrow the issue down and identify where is it originating from)

Step 4: Disable input features (Update in Windows 11 24H2)

Turn Off pointer precision & tablet input services

    a. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse

    b. Click Additional mouse settings

    c. In the Pointer Options tab:

      - Uncheck "Enhance pointer precision"

      - Apply and OK

    d. Then press Win + R, type services.msc

      - Find tablet PC Input service or touch keyboard and handwriting panel service

      - Right-click → Stop → Set startup type to manual or disabled

Step 5: Disable office intelligent services / editor add-ins

    How to turn off:

    a. Go to File > Options > General

    b. Scroll to Office intelligent services

      - Turn it off (uncheck)

    c. Then go to File > Options > Add-ins

      - At the bottom, set Manage: COM Add-ins → click Go

      - Disable any Editor, Grammarly, Ink, or AI writing add-ins

Step 6: Disable GPU hardware acceleration

    a. Go to File > Options > Advanced

    b. Scroll to Display

    c. Check “Disable hardware graphics acceleration”

    d. Restart Word

Step 7: Run word in safe mode (Test purposes)

    To isolate the issue:

    a. Press Win + R

    b. Type:

       winword /safe

    c. Create a new document with shapes and see if the jumping issue happens

NOTE: If it does not happen in Safe Mode, the problem is almost certainly tied to an add-in, font, or background Office feature.

Let me know once done so I can further assist you if still needed.

    Regards

    Iggy

    Hi Iggy,

Thanks for the suggestion to run in Safe Mode, that really helped.

I did that, and the problem stopped happening. I don't have any add-ins, so I tried reinstalling Office, which didn't fix it.

Thinking that it might be corrupted system files, I created a restore point for my computer, and ran a System File Checker to fix any registry issues, and the problem seems to be fixed.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Iggy,

    Thank you for your help!

I am using an HP 17-by3000 series laptop running Windows 11 Home Version 24H2. I first noticed this behavior 2 days ago.

    Per your recommendations:

For Step 1, Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes was already unchecked, and I unchecked Update document content while dragging. The problem still happened.

For Step 2, selected shapes still jumped within the selection pane, from group to group and from shape to shape within a group.

For Step 3, I do use a mouse (not the touchpad), and this device doesn't have pen/touch capability.

I notice that the problem is also happening with text boxes, though not the text within them when the text itself is selected.

Is there anything else I can look at or adjust, to figure out the problem?

    Thanks again for your help.

    RWesbur,

Thank you so much for reaching out. I am Iggy, an independent advisor, and glad to assist you today with this issue.

What device are you mainly using, and when did you notice this behavior?

There are fixes that we can do so we can identify what is really happening.

Step 1: Turn Off "Live Layout"

Sometimes the Live Preview/Layout Options interfere with object focus.

    Steps

    a. Open Word

    b. Go to File > Options > Advanced

    c. Scroll to Editing Options

    d. Uncheck:

       - Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes

       - Update document content while dragging

    e. Click OK

Step 2: Use selection pane (this is a common workaround for this kind of issue)

    a. Go to the Home tab > click Select > Selection Pane

    b. From there, manually select shapes

    c. This can stop Word from "jumping" between objects

Step 3: Switch input device (Mouse vs. Touchpad)

    a. If you're using a touchscreen or stylus, try using only a mouse to see if it fixes

       selection behavior

    b. Disable pen/touch input temporarily under Settings > Devices > Pen &

       Windows Ink

let me know once done so I can assist you further.

    Regards,

    Iggy
