    Theoretically, maybe. Realistically/reliably, no.

It would have to be a discontinued, unsupported release which cannot not be updated to a current level installed on a version of macOS which is discontinued & no longer supported by Apple.

As an alternative you may be able to meet your needs with the free Online web apps or look into other product such as LibreOffice which also is free.

Your OS will be compatible with an older version of Word, but not the current one. Here's my article on which editions of Office you can install on older operating systems: Most Recent Office You Can Run - Best Practices

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm so pleased to know that I'll be able to run Word on my Big Sur OS. I am very grateful!

    Hi Bob,

Many thanks for your reply which was very helpful, as well as being what I expected. I will look into updates which I think means a new computer. In the meantime, I have used LibreOffice. I hope I can transfer the Word documents that I occasionally access to tweak or add to across to LibreOffice. Thanks again.
