Hello,

I am intending to move from 365 Personal to 365 Business Standard. Is there a way to:

  • keep access to the online documents, or do I have to migrate them manually?
  • and more importantly, keep the same Microsoft email address...

Many thanks,

Ella

    Hi Marc,

Thank you for the detailed reply.

Thank you for the information regarding the OneDrive files. Good to know Microsoft does not support migration from one type of account to the other.

You said: "you can keep your existing Microsoft email address (like @outlook.com or @hotmail.com) when moving from Microsoft 365 Personal to Business Standard, but it will remain a separate personal account"

Will my email address, which is currently part of a paid 'Personal' subscription remain active? Or does keeping the @outlook.com email address mean paying for both a Personal and a Business subscription?

Again, many thanks for your help,

    Ella

Hi there, Ella! This is Marc. Thank you for reaching out to the community.

Thanks for providing those details. Based on what you've described, here are a few approaches we can try.

Yes, you can keep your existing Microsoft email address (like @outlook.com or @hotmail.com) when moving from Microsoft 365 Personal to Business Standard, but it will remain a separate personal account. Business accounts typically use custom domain emails (like ******@yourcompany.com), so your personal email won't automatically become your new login, though you can still access it separately or link it in Outlook for convenience.

As for your OneDrive files, Personal and Business use different storage systems, so your documents won’t transfer automatically. You’ll need to move them manually, either by using the OneDrive sync app on your computer or by downloading from your personal account and uploading to your business one. Outlook data like contacts and calendars can be exported and imported using a PST file.

Before making the switch, consider backing everything up, just in case. And don’t delete your personal Microsoft account unless you’re 100% sure you won’t need it anymore.

Let me know if you'd like help with any of these steps!

    Best,
