Thank you for the quick reply, Chris.

    1. I’m using Microsoft 365
    2. This is a specific file, not a blank document.
    3. This document originated from an epub format (I’m writing a book). Maybe the styles copied over with the epub export?
    4. Yes, the default styles appear in the new document.

I fixed this by copying the content from the document and pasting into a new blank document with the default styles.

    I’m good to go.

Thank you and have a good weekend.

    Dear David,

    Nice to meet you!

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I understand you're using Word for Mac and noticing that the usual built-in styles such as Heading 1, Heading 2, and No Spacingare missing from your Styles pane, and instead you're seeing a list of styles labeled like “para [###]”. I’d be happy to help investigate this with you.

To better assist you, could you please confirm the following details?

    1. Which version of Word for Mac are you currently using (e.g., Microsoft 365, Word 2021)?
    2. Are you working in a new blank document, or is this behavior occurring in a specific file or template?
    3. Have you recently opened or edited a document that originated from another system or third-party software (e.g., a PDF converted to Word)?
    4. When you open a brand-new document from File > New, do the standard styles appear there?

This information will help determine whether the issue is document-specific, template-related, or a broader configuration issue.

In the meantime, you can try the following quick check:

    • Open Word and go to File > New > Blank Document
    • Then go to Home > Styles Pane
    • If the default styles still don’t appear, click the Options… link at the bottom of the Styles pane and ensure that “Recommended” or “In use” is selected under “Select styles to show.”

Let me know what you find, and I’ll be glad to guide you further based on your setup.

    Warm Regards,

You found the most likely explanation yourself: the strangely named styles were created when the document was converted from epub to Word format.

    Dear David,

Thank you so much for the update, and I’m so glad to hear you found a solution that worked!

You're absolutely right. Documents created from EPUB or other imported formats often bring over custom or non-standard styles, which can override the familiar default ones in Word. Your approach of copying the content into a new blank document was spot-on and is one of the most effective ways to reset the formatting while retaining your content.

Thank you again for your patience and for reaching out. We value your trust and appreciate the opportunity to support you!

    Warm Regards,
