Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hi Adam,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community, regarding your interest in connecting Microsoft Planner with Power BI, ideally without using Power Automate.
Currently, Microsoft Planner does not offer a direct connector to Power BI. However, there are a few supported alternative methods I try to find you can consider:
Option 1: Use the Power BI Template for Project for the Web (Now Planner Premium)
If your organization uses Planner Premium (formerly known as Project for the Web), you can connect Power BI directly to your Dataverse instance. This allows you to report on Planner data using the official Power BI template.
Steps:
- Download the Power BI template for Project for the Web.
- Open it in Power BI Desktop.
- Enter your Dataverse URL and Project Web App URL.
- Authenticate with your Microsoft 365 account.
This method enables rich reporting on tasks, buckets, plans, and users without needing Power Automate. Youi can see my reference here: Microsoft Support Guide
Option 2: Power Automate Workaround (If Dataverse is not available)
If you're using the standard version of Planner, you can use Power Automate to export Planner data to Excel or SharePoint, which Power BI can then connect to.
Steps:
- Create a scheduled flow in Power Automate.
- Use the “List tasks” action to pull Planner data.
- Save the data to Excel or SharePoint.
- Connect Power BI to the saved file.
Additional Notes:
- Microsoft is transitioning Project for the Web into Planner Premium, which will include enhanced reporting capabilities and integration with Power BI.
- You can learn more about this transition and Planner’s roadmap in the Planner FAQ
If after my suggestions, the issue still persists, please accept my apologize that our ability to support Power Automate related issues here is limited. To ensure you receive the most accurate and timely help, I recommend posting your query in the Microsoft Power Platform Community Forum, where experts and partners regularly: Microsoft Power Platform Community Forum Thread
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
