Or, do I need the next level of subscription? If so, why isnt this feature explained in any of the product decriptions? Why does the Free Express app open the doc when I have the "basic" subscription? Is it not recognizing my acct?

Hello,

Microsoft 365 Basic doesn't come with Excel app. It is only for 100GB of Onedrive storage. The product explanation is here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p...

So, if you try to open an excel document, you would have to use the free online web based Excel via www.office.com instead.
