Why is OneDrive so terrible?

Why would MS think that anyone would want the entire contents of their personal hard drive to be uploaded to a cloud? And further, why would it make sense to delete the local files if someone deleted them from the cloud? In what world does this make sense. It is a poorly designed system and it's a huge violation of privacy of your customers. I have nearly lost all my files because I "deleted" them from OneDrive. I guess I stupidly thought that my local files were safe, as I did not try to delete them. OneDrive, in its ineptitude, decided for me that since I didn't want them on some server somewhere, that I must not need them at all.

Please move to an opt-in model instead of the current opt-out model. And upon opting in, there should be a tutorial of the functionality of the software. A tutorial that an idiot can understand. And it should default to sharing a single folder, not the entirety of a computer.

If it was designed this way to artificially increase "usage" of the terrible software, you did a great job. But you increased usage to impress whoever at the cost of your customers' happiness and at the cost of their privacy. As a basic rule, people don't like their personal possessions (including data) being taken without their knowledge or consent. If you are going to steal our data anyway, at least be sneakier about it.

The main problem with OneDrive is its glacial speed. I worked on a file at 530am, now I am one the road its now 7:30am and it still hasn't synched to this computer, with OneDrive sitting there dumb & stupid telling me that all files are synched (and yes I am connected to the internet).

I will admit this time frame is rare but 10mins is common but total unacceptable.

And this BS about workflows & multiple people working on a file in the cloud. I have the words "synchronisation problem" burned into my screen

The advancement of their technology for their purposes is regressive for their customer… they obviously know this and the consequences; so it must

Be beneficial in ways they are Not disclosing. I have to assume the worst since like everything else now days there is no transparency; at best we get plausible deniability. I’m surprised they haven’t unleashed more bots on these types of posts to try to attack the poster and not the statement (then I would say things are full Circle).

Former office 365 advocate, slowly migrating from surface laptop studio 2, surface laptop 4, surface laptop go, Xbox series x (x2) series s, one s…. Sad face (and the devices I purchased for family …. And roped them into this mess). My apple ecosystem nephews keep laughing at me… I’ve stopped trying to defend it

This reply is really to all those who have contributed to this thread from the get-go.

It's universally apparent that as per, Microsoft (or should it be Microforce given how they go about things these days), are not designing products for the benefit of their consumers, they're designing products to exploit their consumers; it's a cynical data-muncher situation.

I'm not saying it'll be a panacea, but I've come to the inevitable conclusion that Microsoft & Windows has shot it's bolt with me and most of it's clients with extreme prejudice. Enough already. It's time to go. My new Mac Mini M4 arrived today, and even though those I collaborate with work-wise currently use PC's (as I have for decades), means I'll need to install 365 for Mac and outlook for Mac, then despite needing to assimilate a new OS, it's just GOT to be worth it - and there are some great tutorials out there for Mac beginners, so not that hard to do in reality.

If any of you fancy doing the same, here are a couple of links that are really useful in choosing / ensuring your current monitor will be suitable for Mac and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, why and how to work it out:
