Dear PeterD-513,
Hello! Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
It seems that you have encountered an issue where the slides switch abnormally due to audio insertion. I understand your feelings very well and I will try my best to help you!
The following are targeted troubleshooting and solutions, please refer to the operation:
Core problem location
According to your description, the slide transition fails after the audio is inserted, but returns to normal after the audio is removed. This phenomenon is usually related to the following setting conflicts:
- The audio playback mode overrides the automatic slide transition logic (if "Play across slides" is not enabled).
- The audio triggering method is incompatible with the slide timing settings.
- Animation sequence or background task interference.
Corresponding solutions
1. Check the audio playback settings
- To enable Play Across Slides:
- Select the audio icon → Go to the "Play" tab in the top menu bar → Check "Play across slides" and "Play in background".
- Key verification: Make sure the audio's "Start" method is set to "Automatically" (not "On Click" or "In Animation Order").
- Limit audio playback range: In the "Playback" tab, click "Trim Audio" → Make sure the audio length is enough to cover the total duration of 20 slides.
2. Calibrate the slide transition time
- Unified switching trigger conditions:
- Go to the "Transition" tab → uncheck "When clicking the mouse", leave only "Set automatic slide transition time", and enter the number of seconds each slide should stay.
- Note: If a single slide contains independent animation, you need to ensure that the animation duration is ≤ the slide transition time in the "Animation" tab.
- Batch synchronization timing: Select all slides in the slide thumbnail bar on the left (Ctrl+A) → Go to the "Transition" tab → Check "Set automatic slide change time" and apply.
3. Eliminate potential conflicts
- Check the animation trigger priority: Enter the "Animation Pane" (Animation tab → Animation Pane) → Make sure that all animation items are started in "At the same time as the previous animation" or "After the previous animation" to avoid manual trigger interference.
- Test streamlined files: Create a new blank PPT file, import only the current audio and 1-2 slides, and test whether the transition is normal. If it is normal, it means that the original file may have animation or layout compatibility issues. It is recommended to gradually migrate the content to the new file.
Alternative solutions
If the above steps do not work, try:
- Convert audio format: Convert the WAV file to MP3 using an online tool and then reinsert it (some WAV encodings may cause compatibility issues).
- Split audio and switch control: After inserting the audio, add a "Play Audio" trigger animation through the "Animation" tab, set it to "Start from the previous item", and adjust the duration.
It is worth mentioning that if the above steps do not solve your problem, if you wish, you can send me the file via private message and I can help you check the file and see if it can solve the problem.
How to view private messages to me:
Click on the avatar in the upper right corner, click on "..." at the bottom right of the name, and select "View private messages".
If you make any progress, feel free to let me know.
Best wishes
