Word keeps freezing after very small edits are made to any documents

My Word for desktop has had a problem the last few days where it has been continually crashing after very small edits made to documents. It happens to all document regardless of size or content - doing something as small as changing the font makes it freeze, and shift into 'Word is not responding' mode before snapping back to normal and, after another small edit, doing the exact same thing. I've had some occasions where after it goes back to the normal view from the 'not responding' mode, that it freezes up and repeats the process 3-4 times even without me making any edits to my documents.

These documents are editable just fine on the online version and Word is opening them without issue. It just seems to be any kind of edits which are making it do this.

I've already tried multiple fixes including;

  • repairing my Microsoft suite/individual apps
  • disabling add-ins
  • opening in Safe Mode
  • totally uninstalling and reinstalling Office

Nothing has worked so far. It's making it impossible to get any work done so would really appreciate any insights which don't involve one of the solutions above, since none of them has proved very effective at all. I imagine it must be some issue with my laptop, but no other Microsoft product has this problem. I use Excel and Outlook daily and they, along with OneNote, have both been running fine. I also haven't downloaded any new software recently that might have caused it, so not sure where to go from here.

    Hi,

    I tried these steps and none of them worked unfortunately. I attempted again to uninstall Office and found that the app was not actually properly uninstalling all the program files. I went into my program files manually to find the office applications and delete them. I then reinstalled office and so far word is working okay.

    Hi Liv,

    Thank you for using Microsoft products and making community posts.

    I understands how frustrating it is especially since you've already tried so many troubleshooting steps, Don’t worry I will be helping you with this following steps.

    1. Check for Windows Updates – Sometimes, an outdated Windows version can cause compatibility issues with Office apps. Make sure your system is fully updated.
    2. Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration – Go to File > Options > Advanced > Display and check the box for Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration. This can help if the issue is related to graphics rendering.
    3. Change Default Printer – Word interacts with the default printer, and a problematic printer driver can cause freezing. Try setting a different printer (or Microsoft Print to PDF) as the default.
    4. Check for Corrupt User Profile – If the issue persists across all documents but works fine online, it might be related to your Windows user profile. Try creating a new user account and testing Word there.
    5. Run Word as Administrator – Right-click the Word icon and select Run as administrator to see if it behaves differently.

    Please feel free to let me know how it goes.
