Copilot not working - keeps talking to itself randomly

Hello everyone,

just recently got my Asus Zenbook 14 with Copilot and Windows 11. For the first few days Copilot was working fine, but then it has started taking to itself with random greetings, having a full on conversation after just one prompt.

Also the voice keeps interrupting towards the end of every sentence and starts with another random phrase/greeting.

I have already uninstalled/reinstalled, emptied the cache, done the repair and reset options on Windows.

What else can I do?

Subject: Copilot Voice Mode Broken — Auto-Talks to Itself, Resists All Fixes

I’m using a Copilot+ PC (ASUS TUF GAMING A16) and experiencing the same frustrating issue many of you have described—Copilot keeps talking to itself in voice mode. It asks its own follow-up questions, interrupts itself mid-response, and behaves like it’s stuck in a feedback loop.

Here's what I’ve tried so far:

    • Full uninstall and reinstall of Copilot via Microsoft Store
    • Disabled and removed "Copilot 1.0" stub app
    • Attempted to clear %localappdata%\Packages\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_* (folder is locked—even after reboot and terminating app)
    • Copilot auto-launches and restores user state, even after uninstall
    • Voice mode is unusable—it misfires instantly or responds to phantom input

I’ve done everything I can to manually reset this without being forced to create new user profiles or risk BitLocker lockout just to boot into Safe Mode (which Windows warns me will trigger a recovery prompt).

This is absurd for a “Copilot+ PC” that’s supposed to showcase seamless AI integration. It works in the web browser but not in the native app that's supposed to be "integrated". There is no clear way to reset the app’s user session or cached data. Copilot is unusable in my main profile and I shouldn’t have to jump through security hoops or live out of a test account to get the product I paid for to work. This absolutely needs escalation.

Hi - I have this problem on both - ironically - a MS Surface, and a desktop with a MS Webcam mic. It's almost as if MS doesn't test their software on their own hardware...

Anyway - the problem is that the microphone is picking up Copilots audio output and Copilot neither recognises it's own voice nor it's own words and filters them out. (Gemini etc do not seem to have the same problem, although this may because they are web apps and are inherently more resistant to audio loops)

The workaround that worked for me (until this is fixed - because it's a catastrophic, unfathomable and inexcusable design flaw) is both infuriating and also infuriatingly obvious in retrospect: just turn the microphone sensitivity down. I mean right down. To near zero (I have it on 5%. What value works for you will be down to how loud your speakers are, how conductive your laptop chassis is etc)

(The mic sensitivity slider in W11 is under settings>sound>input>volume. Control Panel>Sound>Recording also works.)

At such low levels, Copilot still seems to hear well enough though.

Note that doing this almost certainly interferes with other mic based tasks such as video calls, so you might want to write a quick powershell script to swap between volume states and map it to keyboard shortcut(s) and/or to a shortcut that runs the script before launching copilot.

    I have followed your steps. I have contacted microsoft. No fix so far. I send details of a complete copilot conversation;

    [

This conversation DID NOT happen as recorded.  I hit the copilot key, and then opened the microphone.  I was in a totally silent room, other than the copilot speaking, I spoke only once.  There is no echo.  The copilot initiated the conversation, and the first 9 lines were spoken by the copilot.  It continues speaking after my line 10.

It attributes the indented words to me in the record of our conversation.

The only words I spoke in this entire conversation were ‘Are you still stuttering and repeating yourself?’ at line 10.

Copilot may not have said the words it attributes to itself. Often it stutters badly, not able to say a full sentence.

    Okay!

                                    It's okay.

    Sure!

                                      Sure. Go ahead! ’’______________________

That’s the entire conversation.  Other that line 10, I did not speak.  From reading the conversation, it seems that the copilot is doing more than listening to itself, and replying.  Funny, It’s like it is having a imaginary conversation with me, and someone else whose isn’t recorded.  Is it imagining a 3 person conversation, and recording just two parts of the chat.  It responds to questions never asked.

Who is this ‘Jess’, or what looks like a Polish word ‘Czołgę’! ‘D'you okay?’.  ‘Janes’. 'air thing'.

Again, other that line 10, I said or typed no part of this conversation.

There are serious flaws in this program.  Microsoft told me first that it was an echo in my room,  then that it was just nodding to itself.  Then that they would probably bring out a patch sometime to fix this.  Not good enough.

    I have followed the step 1 -5.

I tried the REPAIR button first, twice, that didn’t help. Then I tried the RESET. That didnt help, indeed the copilot hadn’t forgotten me.

I checked for updates twice today. It is up to date.

I am not running additional apps.

I am not using copilot in a browser.

I have reset windows explorer. I have restarted. This didn’t help.

It does hear my voice, I asked 'what time is it', It tried to answer about 4 or 5 times. It wasnt able to get the words together. Only fragments. It then moves on to talking to itself. Yeak, right, okay ahaaa mmm etc.

I have paid a premium for a copilot laptop, which doesn't work. Please help.

I have this issue also, though I am using Co-pilot on my Android phone. I ask Co-pilot a question, and it starts to answer correctly but then stops itself and starts over. There is no noise in the room that could be triggering Co-pilot thinking that I'm talking, though it often responds with Mm-Hm as if I am talking to it. It will sometimes start to ask itself derivative questions and answer them. Since I don't have the same kinds of settings that you mentioned for Isa44's laptop, what do you suggest I do to fix this?

Here is the transcript I received from asking a single question of "How much does it cost to regrade and plant a new lawn."
