Everytime i open a word document online the default theme is always dark mode. I click it off and it might last for a day or 2, or at least until the next time i open another word doc online, and it opens with dark mode enabled again. Why does this keep happening? And what do i have to do to stop it from changing whenever it feels like it?

Are you referring to the dark mode setting that you can access via https://m365.cloud.microsoft/?auth=1?

Here, my selection seems to be sticky. I should add that I do not use dark mode in Windows, either.

    Hi,

This is not an issue with the application installed on my computer, its an issue with the online cloud microsoft word that you open in the web browser. I have never had a problem with either of the microsoft office products that are installed on my computer. Word is the only one that when opened online in the web browser, that the theme keeps getting reset to dark mode even after i change it to light.

For record, in the installed application it was already set to white, and my windows system settings already has the default app mode set to light, and accent color set to manual.

To reiterate, this is a problem with the ONLINE WEB WORD. Not the installed program.

    Dear Billy,

Thank you for reporting this issue with Microsoft Word's theme settings on Windows. Here's how to permanently set your preferred theme for the desktop application:

Permanent Solution for Word on Windows 1. Application-Specific Setting

    1. Open Microsoft Word
    2. Go to:

File → Account → Office Theme

    1. Select "White" or "Colorful" (Light Mode)
    2. Uncheck "Let Office match Windows theme"

    2. Windows System Settings

    1. Press Windows Key + I to open Settings
    2. Navigate to:

    Personalization → Colors

    1. Set these options:
      1. Choose your mode: Light
      2. Default app mode: Light
      3. Turn off: "Automatically pick accent color"

    3. Document Default Enforcement

    For existing documents:

    1. Open the document
    2. Go to:

Design → Theme → Office Theme

    1. Select "Office White"
    2. Click "Set as Default"

    Why This Happens

    • Windows dark mode settings may override Word preferences
    • Office cloud sync can revert changes
    • Organizational policies might enforce dark mode

    Business Account Considerations

    If changes don't persist:

    1. Contact your IT administrator to check:
      1. Group Policy settings for Office
      2. Microsoft 365 tenant-wide theme settings

    Best regards,
